I am due to start an FNP program after the first of the year, and am very excited about it. Except that I would someday like to teach, at the university level, after practicing for a few years (or in addition to clinical practice). So do I need an MSN in Education in addition to my MSN-FNP (plan to get the DNP initials after becoming board certified, as it looks like that's the future for NP's)? Any assistance here is appreciated!

from my area.... the local schools do not require an msn in education to teach. if they did, i would not be in the acnp program. :) all the area schools around here require is an msn, period. it doesnt matter what kind of msn you are. however, if you do have an msn in education, it would probably be helpful.
i graduate this december and if my prospective job allows, i will go ahead and start teaching clinicals part time in the next year or so... and do that while working as an acnp until i'm ready to teach full time (probably within 10 yrs). my suggestion? just start looking at some ads. that's what i do... constantly. go to some of the area schools' websites and then go look at their job opps. see what the requirements are. you can also simply call and ask them.
hope this helped... and good luck!! :)

Hello, I am a recent graduate of the MSN Program at UTMB Galveston with a specialty as a PNP. My answer is yes, you can teach at the unversity level. They will want you to take a few (3 to 5) education type courses to prepare you for teaching if your MSN was not in nursing education. I know these classes are available online from UTMB Galveston, and the universities are glad to go ahead and hire you on before you have even enrolled to take them. I got this info from UTMB professors, so it should be pretty accurate.
Thanks!
well, although i go to school in galveston, i just commute... i live 4.5 hrs north of here. and that makes sense about teaching. unit, you shouldnt have problems... i would just call around and ask area schools. good luck!

great information and accurate. you will find some differences between schools and states as to requirements for teaching. some will require you only be enrolled in a graduate program to teach clinical. others will require an evaluation course to teach didactic. the institution that hires you will provide you will the information needed to qualify for teaching in their program.
and it also depends on what educational level you want to teach at... lvn vs adn vs bsn, etc.
