Can I rent my tax home while I travel temporarily?

I own a home in FL. We plan to rent it out while we are gone over the next year. We lived in the home (and worked in the area) from January to July. The Renters will have the house for 1 year (July to July). My first assignment is 13 weeks and I don’t expect to work continuously throughout the next year with the travel company. I pay the mortgage, taxes and utilities at the property. I will claim the rent as income on taxes. All of our belongings are still at this property-we still receive our mail here, registered to vote, drivers license etc and plan to return to the home over the next year to visit as well as return home next July when the renters lease will end.

can I legally take the tax free stipends if we are collecting rent on our home? I will have living expenses while on assignment (rent, etc). And I do not expect this to be a permanent career change-maybe 2-3 assignments over the next year and then return to our home. Any advice how to legally rent the house and still claim stipends?

My non-attorney/accountant thought is no.  Considering the potential implications, it it were me, I would address this with a tax attorney/accountant.

Best wishes.
