Here are my questions:

Okay first I need just some basic background information, like how long have you been a nurse, where did you get your degree, what department do you work in, and maybe an area you desire to work in.

1. How do you see the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse changing in practice?

2. Please describe one example of an ethical dilemma you have faced in practice.

3. How do you maintain your practice expertise?

4. How do you deal with conflicts with members of the healthcare team? (other nurses, physicians, etc.)

5. What motivates and rewards you in your career?

1. How do you see the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse changing in practice?

It happens every single day--RN's are taking on more and more "responsibilities" and it is expected of them. More required practices are mandated to perform or "handle", yet time does not expand with it! I believe RN's are becoming more independent.

2. Please describe one example of an ethical dilemma you have faced in practice.

The biggest ethical dilemma I face is that wonderful gray area of keeping patients comfortable when they are terminal. Some people think Morphine shouldn't be given because it depresses the respiratory system, others believe it to be a comfort measure.

3. How do you maintain your practice expertise?

By jumping in and learning something new every day. I always ask questions when I'm not sure. If you don't use your skills, you eventually lose them ;)

4. How do you deal with conflicts with members of the healthcare team? (other nurses, physicians, etc.)

Depends on the situation. Sometimes I just ignore others' attitudes, sometimes I address it. I don't let anyone talk down to me, but sometimes people need to blow off steam. If it's not directed at me, I don't sweat it. If I have a problem with someone, I'll be the first to tell them about it.

5. What motivates and rewards you in your career?

Helping patients and teaching them self care. Day in and day out--I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else.
