You would be an asset to any OR with all that experience. Many hospitals will put you through their PeriOP 101 program or a decent orientation that is tailored to what you already know and new areas that you need experience in. Sure the technology has changed as has documentation , but the basic foundations are still the same. If you scrubbed as an OR RN previously you will have an even great advantage as many hospitals are looking for RNs who scrub due to the shortage and the flexibility of being able to staff both roles. Definitely sign up with AORN and if possible attend the big AORN conference in March next year. AORN posts many job openings on their website as well. There is a big shortage right now in hospitals for nurses and its particularly bad in the OR's so I am sure you will be snapped up in no time. Best of luck.

Hello OR nurses
I was an OR nurse with over 18 years experience; I last worked in a multi speciality OR in 1997. I was there during the advent of laparoscopic procedures and had experience in ortho, neuro, gym, C-sections, urology…everything except cardiac/open heart procedures.
I left the OR to learn other areas of nursing, and I learned them quickly. I have a desire to return to the OR. Has too much time past since my peri-op experience making me not of value to a surgery department. Personally, I am confident that any new technologies I will be able to pick up quickly, as I am a fast learner & I’ve got the basics of the peri-op process ingrained.
