Can I even get into any nursing programs?

Published

From what I understand, most schools require a minimum of a 2.5 science GPA but I only have a 2.3. My overall college GPA is around 3.4 but it seems like it doesn't matter as much as the science GPA. I already finished all the prerequisite courses so there aren't anymore classes for me to take. People always tell me I can raise the science GPA by retaking those classes, however I already retook one of them once and that was the maximum times I can retake it. I've made a lot of mistakes around 2009 (which happens to be around the time I took those classes) so that's the reason for my low GPA but I've became a much better student since then. Right now I'm trying to find every remaining option I have left, so I was just wondering if there's anything else I can do or where I can go to even apply to a nursing program. I really don't want to give up on nursing and I want to make this work. Thanks.

I would call local nursing program advisors and ask what the avg gpa is for students being accepted. If you wont make the cut, try a LPN program..you can take a lpn to rn bridge program later. there are many threads on here of people doing that who couldnt get in or failed rn programs.

Try applying to universidad de interamericana de Puerto Rico metropolitan campus. They have a nursing program that is taught in English. The gpa requirement is 2.25. They accept everyone. U can even still apply now for august 1 start date.. no waitlist..there is even a board on here that has a lot of info. I will post the link in another post.

Yes, you're science GPA (and other pre-reqs) is generally all that matters. Nursing is a tough profession and you need to be strong in science and basic math. Nursing is VERY competitive and just having the minimum GPA to get in to school doesn't always mean you will get in if the other applicants have higher GPA's. For me personally I don't think I know anyone to get into Nursing school with lower than a 3.4 (on a lottery) I believe, but most are 3.5 and above, plus stellar test scores.

The best I think you can do is speak to your college counselor and see if they offer grade petitioning at your school (which is to remove bad grades from your record with cause). If not, and you have already used your one time option for a repeat I'm afraid I don't think you'd be accepted to any schools.

Also if you end up looking into some sort of vocational school that will accept you (I'm not sure of their requirements) please be sure to make sure they are accredited and what their pass rate is for the program and NCLEX. These schools are in the habit of "stealing" tens of thousands of dollars from hard working people that can never use their degree of become hired. If there is still an LVN program near you I would also check that out! They can be competitive as well but I do know that the pre-reqs are less.
