Can you become a public speaker in nursing?

Published

I've always LOVED doing public speaking and presentations. I was wondering if there are certain requirements that allow you to become a public speaker? What are the requirements to do this? Do you need a certain degree? A certain number of years of experience? My instructors have encouraged me to do this as well. What can I do and how do I do it? Thanks!

I'm not sure how you define a public speaking gig, but hospital educators do it all the time with their classes. Public health nurses can run community seminars. Academic educators and researchers present at conferences. Leadership positions get called upon to speak at schools.

All of these require some years of experience. No one gets professional speaking gigs unless they have the qualifications. No one wants to listen to someone who doesn't know much, ya know?

On second thought, I take that back. I've been called to be on new grad panels. I don't know diddly except my experience as a new grad. ;)

Donna Cardillo is a nurse/public speaker, i have listened to her speak at a conference and have read several of her articles. She is an inspiring and engaging speaker, if you have the opportunity to listen to her speak in person, I recommend you do.
