Can an AS get you into a Bachelors in Nursing Program?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I've read through some threads, but I'm not totally clear on some things. Currently I am in a technical college for an Associates degree in Science in medical assisting, and would like to eventually go to an online college (I have 2 kids and 3 step kids, so regular college at this point is not an option) for my Bachelors in Nursing. Now, I have looked over some websites on the programs available and from what I see it says the bachelors programs are for nurses trying to further their degrees. Right now at this point I'm just trying to figure out what school my credits will apply to, but its hard to get a clear answer from them when you tell them your "just looking" or that your in another college and not looking to transfer out immediately. Any answers to clarify this for me would be SO appreciated!! Thank you!

For the most part, you will need to complete the prerequisites to any program that you apply to. For nursing, usually some combination of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, English, chemistry, biology, developmental psychology, algebra, etc. Your medical assisting degree may, or may not, have you do some of the same courses. Look up the requirements on the websites of the schools of nursing that you are considering.

Are you planning to complete your current Medical Assistant program, then apply to an online BSN program? To the best of my knowledge, most online BSNs for nursing are RN-BSN. I just checked one of the programs I am familiar with and while the admission requirements do not specifically state that you must have an Associate's in nursing or be a registered nurse, the program description states that it is "for registered nurses". The admission requirements do provide a list of coursework that must be completed. I would assume that most schools should provide this information on their website for similar programs, or someone at the school should be able to provide it to you even if you're "just browsing".

As far as determining if your credits transfer, I believe most schools will not assess that until after you are admitted. However, you could probably get some helpful information from your current school. They should have some experience dealing with other prospective transfer students and should have an idea what credits will/won't transfer.

Hope this is helpful. Best of luck! :)
