I read a while ago, that if you come as a student to New Zealand, you can apply for permanent status after 3 months. Was/is it true?

I am from NZ and have never heard of that. You probably would have more show of getting residence here if you are qualified as we are desperately short of nurses in many cities. If you want further info log onto the immigration website for NZ.
Ok, thanks for clarifying. :)

It all depends on what study you are completing. If you are completing the Competency course which NZNC requires, to enable you to get registration as RN in NZ, then there may be a possibility that you may be able to apply within 3 months of arrival. Competency course may take 6-8 weeks to complete.

an employment offer is often required to be eligible for the work permit categories in new zealand unless an applicant is able to meet the requirements for the country’s 'open' work permit categories like the family stream and humanitarian stream.
to be a new zealand resident, applicants must meet at least one residence category available in the current residence program. there are specific requirements for each person applying for residence as well as their partners and dependant children. all applicants must meet nz’s health and character requirements.
