Can anyone help me clarifying on nursing school with things on Chest-X ray

Published

My ppd Skin test is positive, I did three Chest X-rays in 2 years at three different places, with the last two been done recently. Two of them, doctors said there are a couple of minute calcified granuloma in one of the lungs.

I don't have active TB and never had it before, granuloma is probably from previous exposure to TB patients.

I just finished a ten-month medicine from my family doctor.

I took some pre-reqs for nursing school already. Now I have to think twice what if this Chest X-rays things provents me from passing physical examination. Then the my whole work in these years preparing for career switch will be turned out to be wasted.

I called several nursing schools I am interested in. One of the lady told me the lungs have to be clear, all others said they are not sure.

So I called State Board of New York, got an answer as long as I don't have active TB, I can go ahead and apply for schools and later on if eligihle apply for license.

My question is: anyone knows if a Nursing school can still deny me for calcified points on lungs despite the state board's policy?

I only called new york state board, will other states have similar policies regarding TB and licensure? or they can have different policies and do not allow people with unclear lungs to pratice?

Thanks for all.

You'd have to call the BON in other states in which you might practice. Just because it's OK in NY doesn't mean it's OK in another state. It also depends on the nursing school. Some school's have different policies, but if they let you in a NY school and you found out it's OK to practice, you're OK in NY.

Not sure about other states.

Good luck to you!

I called another state, I was told that the state only asks for fingerprints for criminal background checking. they don't even ask for the physical examination results. Asmission is up to each individual school.

I was also told that my situation was not uncommon, and that it is not uncommon for people with positive skin test to develop small granuloma. They are not contagious.

So my guess is that as long as I could get into a school, it will be OK for me. But since this is not contagious, hopefully it will not create any problem.
