Calling facilities for interview

Alright seasoned travelers, I have a question/concern. I am about to finish up my 1st travel assignment. My recruiter and I talked about a position a few days ago and I agreed to be submitted to the facility. An hour or so later, my recruiter called and gave me the # to the ER manager of that facility and told me to call and see if I could get an interview. Is this common practice? And does it help or hinder my chance of getting an interview? I feel like it is being pushy in a way. You just never know how a manager is going to respond to that. Do they think you're being pushy, or do they like that you sort of took charge?

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the practice in general. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Usually this is a mechanism to bypass a slow HR or slow hospital practices. But the manager should have your profile before initiating a call. One hour later seems unlikely but possible if they have an online system. I would verify with your recruiter that the profile is available to the manager before calling. Be prepared for an interview if you call as you may be connected immediately and most managers want to do things now unless they are in a meeting. If they don't have your profile in front of them, also be prepared with a 30 second synopsis of your career - 3 years staff ER in level one hospital, one completed travel assignment level two hospital. Strong trauma, get along very well with staff and physicians. Never late (managers love that one).
