Greetings Nursing Informatics Community,
The TIGER Initiative is collecting examples of how information
technology can be used to demonstrate and support the forces of
magnetism. We want to provide numerous examples to help organizations
along their magnet journey. We are collecting this information to
publish a "help guide" and plan to share at a pre-conference workshop at
the Annual Magnet Conference this fall.
We are specifically looking for examples of how information technology
enables communication, education, and the delivery of patient care and
can demonstrates the forces of magnetism. Our goal is to relate these
examples to the 14 forces of magnetism, and how these examples benefit
nursing. A few ideas of examples that could be used are listed below to
help jog your memory, but this is certainly not an exhaustive list:
* Interdisciplinary documentation
* Evidence-based documentation
* Nursing involvement using information systems to obtain
Quality Improvement measures, core measures, and other quality data
* Using information management to obtain nurse-sensitive
indicators
* Nursing Informaticists or Director of Nursing Informatics
positions that are an integral component of the senior nursing
leadership team and report directly to the Chief Nursing Executive
* Nursing Informaticists that serve as an internal consultant to
the magnet coordinators
* Active staff nurse involvement in committees that participate
in system design, validation and acceptance
* Innovative education enabled by technology (e.g., e-learning)
* Technologies that improve nursing communication and
nurse-to-patient communication and nurse-to provider communication
(e.g., automated nurse scheduling, voice-activated communication with
patients, capacity management, message boards, etc.)
* Technologies that improve the work environment (message
boards, etc.)
* Technologies that empower consumers to communicate with their
families and make better healthcare decisions
* Electronic health records, computerized provider order entry,
and integrated personal health records
* Technologies that improve patient safety, reduce errors, etc.
(handoffs, transitions of care)
* Medication administration and other bar-coding systems
* New models of care, application of existing evidence, new
evidence, and visible contributions to the science of nursing supported
by technology
* Outcomes achieved as a result of the technology implemented
We will align the examples collected to the 14 Forces of Magnetism and
provide this document back as part of the TIGER Initiative
recommendations. We will accept any form of examples-e.g., brief
description, presentation, abstract, or will be happy to interview you
over the telephone to discuss your experiences. Please email your
suggestions and contact information to
[email protected]. We are
working to complete our written recommendations by the end of the
summer, so are collecting examples through June 13, 2008. We look
forward to hearing from you and will happily share our recommendations
with you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reply to
[email protected].
Thank you in advance for your participation and your willingness to
share your experiences in leveraging technology to support the Magnet
journey.
