california to washington/lvn to rn

Published

Anyone know what would be the best route to take. I'm an LVN almost done with my RN thru Excelsior here in California. May want to move to Washington within the year. I'm thinking finish my RN in California, then figure out how to transfer RN to Washington? Any website leads, advice would be great. Thanks.

You will not be able to transfer a license, your best bet is to go for intial licensure in WA to begin with. Licenses to not transfer, you endorse.

Not sure when you started your Excelsior program, but if it was after December, 2003, then you will have to jump thru hoops to get the RN license in CA. Much easier to just go the route of WA to begin with.

Go to the WA board website. WA requires a 200 hour pre-nclex preceptorship for Excelsior grads (California could learn something here). The forms are on the website. It's not hard to arrange and it seems to fit the needs of all involved. I think it should be required of all new grads.

So, Suzanne4, you think I should scrap my 6 nc courses and begin all over in Washington? Yes, I did begin the program before Dec. 2003.

Willwork4travel, still not clear, should I finish NC 7 here in Calif. and the CPNE, then do the 200 hr. pre-nclex in Washington, then the NCLEX?

Thanks.

p.s. will check out the Washington Board website. thanks.

Since you were enrolled prior to dec 2003, it doesn't really matter. You won't have to start over anywhere. Keep going in the program and take the NCLEX wherever you happen to be at the time. It's the same test in CA as in WA. I took the NCLEX for Oregon from a testing center in Oakland, CA.

Then, if you want to get licensed in the other state, it's just paperwork and money for endorsement. Not too complicated. Good luck on the CPNE and if you have questions, give either board a call, as they are both quite helpful on the phone.

sounds pretty straight-forward. whew! thanks Willwork4travel.
