California “30-unit option” is dead

Published

My daughter is a LVN in California, she graduated from a Community College. She wants to continue "LVN to RN" or "LVN to BSN" in a public school but those programs are severely "impacted". If we need to spend a ton of money for private school - we considered the "30-unit option" to reduce the amount of tuition. However, I reached out to the State to find out which schools are offering the "30-unit option" see their response below:

"Hello,

For fiscal year 2022/2023, College of the Redwoods graduated at least one 30 unit option student and took the NCLEX-RN. There were two 30 unit option test takers who passed the NCLEX-RN on the first try during that same timeframe.

WOW!! One!?

It is all a money thing, colleges especially private ones want to charge 100K plus and commit you to a full RN 2 year program! Crazy!

Schools are mandated to offer the 30-unit option which is why you see it listed on all their website but they state it is on an "as space allows" basis which they make to mean never and they actively discourage students from this option. Any advanced placement is used to fill spots of students who drop out of the traditional program and they give priority to traditional student repeaters or lvns who want the degree option which means the 30 unit option applicants are essentially never selected.

What part of california are you in? Yes programs are impacted but it is not impossible to get into a program. Also the only difference between a 30 unit RN and an lvn-RN is that the 30 unit option doesn't include the general ED classes to fulfill the associate degree requirement. Your daughter can take her gen ED's at a community college inexpensive. There is a private school in Lancaster CA career care institute that allows you to transfer all your gen ED and lvn credits after which the tuition ends up being around 30k when the original price is 80k. Most other private schools limit the number of units you can transfer. Worth looking into if you live close to that area.

This is so true! It all makes sense.
Unfortunately, schools are a business.
