California State University, Fullerton, California State University, Los Angeles, California State University, San Marcos - Advice on my chances?

Published

Hi everyone, I have recently decided to purse nursing. I graduate with my degree in Physiology in 2021. I am so torn between an ABSN program or an ADN program. I only have CSUF, CSULA, and CSUSM as my ABSN options. I know the programs are so competitive so I was hoping to get some insight on my chances and/or what I need to increase my chances?

College:

- Science GPA: 3.7

- Cumulative GPA: 3.8

- missing Micro, Statistics (took for a P during covid, schools won't accept it)

Work:

- 911 EMT

- Emergency Dept. EMT

- Human cadaver dissector for tissue donation (currently)

I have no choice but to work, and I can do part-time. I am so scared to feel like I am wasting my BS because I'm in so much debt from undergrad if I do ADN. But I want to get my life started already and I know it is a great option too. I would appreciate any and all advice. I am so lost and just need some guidance. I'm a first gen college student and the only healthcare worker in my family. Thank you !

Have you signed up to take the missing courses yet? That would be your first step. It's hard to gauge where you would fall since your pre-reqs aren't completed and that may boost your cumulative and science GPAs.

Have you looked at the admissions requirement for each school to figure out what you need? There's nothing wrong with doing a ADN over an ABSN if that's what makes sense financially for you. There are many RN-to-BSN programs that are online--I have a friend who is completing a program concurrently while getting her ADN. It doesn't matter where you get your degree whether it's a private school or CC because it won't matter when you're working in the same hospitals as co-workers.

I can't speak to other programs because I only applied to CSUSM ABSN because the requirements were simple (quantitative only) and they didn't have an expiration date on pre-reqs. A lot of schools do and I didn't want to retake several classes. I was able to calculate my score from their guide and figure out where I stand from their admissions statistics on their website. If anything, I would have liked to do an ADN program and then RN-BSN because it's cheaper but the CCs in my area are more competitive than CSUSM. But ultimately, I would have needed to spend more time re-taking those pre-reqs and that just wasn't worth it to me when I could go back to school sooner and start working sooner.
