Kaiser versus the 'Others'

U.S.A. California

Are there any Kaiser RNs out there (current or former) who either really like it or really hate it? What are they like as an employer?

What is the care like there? I have heard horror stories, and have heard wonderful things as well, although more bad than good. They are the best pay and benefits in the area, but is there a cost?

What do you as employees of Kaiser feel your personal healthcare is like? Do you feel like your patients are getting the appropriate care from the Kaiser system? Do you feel like YOU are getting appropriate care from the Kaiser system?

There is a joke running around the Kaiser is the KMart of healthcare. They seem to run below national average as far as meeting their core measures for cardiac, pneumonia, CHF, etc. Yet other sites will rank them as good as any other (Sutter, CHW) as far as patient satisfaction.

Please feel free to discuss the pros and cons of Kaiser from your viewpoint!

Thanks!

There have been some excellent replies thus far. Thank you so much.

I would like to hear your experiences as a patient of Kaiser. Are you happy with your medical care, your doctor, your access to care, etc?

Also, do you feel like Kaiser is concerned for their patients. Do you feel you, yourself are able to give quality care within the system? Do you feel as though your patients are getting appropriate care and access to what they need?

Thanks!

Hey Mark,

Well I was born at Kaiser SFO and have been a pt since birth. i love my plan. very user friendly. you can email your doctors, set up appointments and refill rx online. appointments are easy to get. I had my son here and had very great nurses and doctors. only one time i had a bad experience with a doctor who had no bedside manners (when I was a teenager).

as for as the doctors being caring --(fr my experiences)

my mom's doctor calls the house to f/u on her meds and to see how she is doing. my doctor calls when i don't have a test done that she ordered. so yeah there are great doctors that are caring and concerned about people's health.

I have seen some nurses here who do not provide the best care to pt's, and should be reported, but all you can do is write them up or call a hotline. having done my clinicals at KP i have seen nurses and doctors provied quality care to patients and of course there are some that do not provide good care, but you find that everywhere. I have not worked as a nurse yet --will start in the summer. and yes i believe that i will be able to provide quality care within the system. in the lab(where i currently work at) we meet the turn around time for results almost all the time. this helps the nurses and docs in implementing the type of care needed for the pts. We make it a big deal when we do not meet the turn around time and try to figure out ways to improve.

I know that some people have nothing but bad things to say about kp, but like i said earlier, i love it here.

hope this helps
