California Nursing programs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I kow everyone who is done with there prereq are searching for the right school, sio I wanted to ask the question what state, private, community college is best to apply. I will be applying everywhere for a program and I was ideas and opinions on what schools are out there and how they rank.

The state programs are so complicated because each program wants different things even though its the same program. They should just make one standard prereq to simplify and eliminate the confusion of applying to differetn schools and this will give us the idea of our chances in each program.

thanks:welcome:

check here for school's nclex pass rates. That should help you get an idea about programs.

Best of luck to you. I am at a Cal State which has a decent program. I am glad I went this route because my school doesn't maintain a waitlist. So I got in first shot and didn't have to wait 2-3 years at a community college.

your quote is misleading, are you at a cal state that has no waitlist because they only allow a certain number of students a year and do not let you reapply to the college more than once?

no. you have to reapply if you don't get in. Which means if you don't get accepted the first time you can apply again and they give you an extra point or two for applying before. I just mean that you have a chance of not waiting forever to get in. And several people in my class were rejected before they got in.

They now accept 80 students twice a year. They do have a waitlist, as a backup list of people that may not accept and people will move into the class off of that list. But the list doesn't carry over into other application periods. you have to reapply.

Sorry if I didn't explain enough to make it clear.

What cal state are you attending? I live in the socal area and have found some ridiculous rules. According to the people at csulb you can only reapply once and they dont add any points or anything to your second application. If you dont get accepted the second time then you must apply elsewhere. So what I'm understanding from their statement is that if you apply once and get rejected then you pretty much have no chance of ever getting accepted at the college. According to csula if you get a "C" in any of the science prereqs even if your total science gpa is over 3.0 then you cannot apply. This is very disheartening........

I totally agree with you. Its ridiculous how each nursing school has different rules and standards for admission. They should get a hint and follow what other schools do and make one standard application.

Specializes in SRNA.

All of the nursing programs in the state do have a core set of pre-reqs that are mandated by the state, this is how each program becomes accredited and how its graduates are eligible to sit for the NCLEX.

Generally the core science pre-reqs include: Microbio, Anatomy, Physiology, and Chemistry. In addition, many schools require the following non-science pre-reqs: Public Speaking/Interpersonal Communication, Lifespan Development, Nutrition, and English/Composition.

Honestly, I haven't seen much more variety beyond those courses, other than the fact that each school likes to tack on one specific course that they feel might supplement the nursing curriculum.

In addition, I think its quite obvious that the standards for BSN and MSN nursing programs should be a bit more challenging than ADN programs, as the applicant is hoping to receive a more advanced, challenging degree.

Thanks for that link!!! I was looking for some kind of percentage everywhere! I'll be going to Long Beach City College for pre-reqs and wanted to see their passing rate...not too bad! Thanks!

All the two year community college programs in California have only four pre-requisites. You may need other classes to complete an Associates degree but you won't need them to take the NCLEX. They are Freshman English, Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology. That's it. In my school the competition for entry only included the grades in those four classes.
