I am looking to connect with anyone who has started a healthcare practice of any kind in California and is someone other than an MD. I would like to start a business and hire my supervising physician as a consultant. Since the business idea is mine and I plan to finance the company, I am interested in a business model that does not require physician ownership. Perhaps a non-profit business is the only way to do this as in this case, no one "owns" the business?
I have been told that there are NPs who have done this in California but I haven't spoken with any of them and I keep running into online articles that imply NPs may NOT own their own business. If a NP can function as a PCP, diagnose, treat, and consult as long as there is a supervising physician and there are standardized protocols in place, then why would they not be permitted to own the business?

Hi there! I have been researching the same thing. I was ready to file for an LLC, meet with my collaborator, and order rx's; then I heard LLCs won't get reimbursed, nurse corporations will maybe get reimbursed here in California and medical corporations will get reimbursed but an NP can only own 49% of the company (an MD must own 51%) Arghhh. I need to do more research. I am not paying a lawyer to help set up what may not be possible. I am looking for regular insurance company reimbursement for PEDS, not medicare. Any ideas?
