California Jobs for New Grads 2014

U.S.A. California

Published

I am moving from Colorado to California in the next couple weeks for my husband's job. I have heard that the California new grad market for nurses is pretty competitive. Does anyone have any advice on a particular area of the state that is less competitive. I am ready to live anywhere, I just really want to get some experience under my belt!

My husband will be working out of San Ramon and a friend told him that the Central Valley was hiring new grads. I would really appreciate any information on which areas are less competitive in CA and if anyone knows anything about new grad positions in the Central Valley.

Thanks!

Northern CA, Southern CA and Coastal CA are all very saturated. Inland CA, Desert CA and CA along the Mexican border (NOT San Diego--I'm referring to Imperial County) is better but still tight. Definitely apply to everything you see because you never know. Just be warned that it's going to be a tough fight. Be willing to look outside of the hospital box as well.

And I agree with zzbxdo: it's actually kinder on our parts to tell you the truth about job hunting here up front, than to give you false hope and let you be blindsided by reality. Trust me, I don't like being a Negative Nancy as much as you don't like hearing it. But when the new grads working as CNAs and techs in my facility can't even get hired into our own new grad program because there's so much competition...better I be honest with you.

Good luck.

I think you will find something, it may take a while, but if you have a nice background/experience be hopeful. If you don't get into an acute care hospital within 3 months start looking at nursing homes and home health positions. One of our classmates is doing traveling home health and they pay her very well. I'm not sure if you have PHN, but alameda county and contra costa public health hire new grads frequently.

Don't get overwhelmed and think you're absolutely not going to find something. You will. Stay hopeful and keep searching.

Try looking for jobs on Indeed.com. search for these cities: pleasanton, san ramon, dublin, oakland, san leandro, hayward (has many skilled nursing facilities), union city, fremont, livermore, and a few others. If you put your resume up, nurse recruiters will contact you frequently for PRN job assignments until you land a job.

Here is a new grad job on a respiratory medical unit in Modesto. I'm telling you, I do find a lot of positions worth applying to east towards San Ramon. Lot of my classmates are there.

I'm from the Central Valley and I feel that the market may be slightly easier for new grads here but not much. I have a job offer waiting just because I've been working for a local hospital for a year. The cost of living is affordable here though which is a plus but it's a little ways away from San Ramon. Good luck in your move and job search!!
