California/arizona new grad

Hi im a new grad and have been getting job offers through a recruiter in places like nappa valley, Maryvale etc. which are not quite where I want to be but still a lot better than Canada. I'm looking for a nurse grad job somewhere around huntington beach/ OC and I know its very expensive there. I woudl be renting probably with roomates and such costing about 700$ a month. When I hear the cost of living is expensive there, is that like everything from groceries to gas etc? because the avg wage is about 28 from what ive been offered there and to me i would think that would be plenty to get me by and make me some money as well. Any suggestions or input?

I used to live in California (and I loved it), and have never worked n Arizona. But from what I have read on this listserve, for all of the nursing shortage that Arizona has, the pay and benefits are awful (amd working conditions). It is what is called a "right to work" state. Which, those of us who don't work in these states, call them, "right to work for less". If you know what I mean. I would head for California, with the staffing ratios, and much higher rate of pay. JMHO.

Thanks a lot for your input, I'm starting to think the same from all the sketchy people I have talked to in AZ. I thin kthe only place i would be interested in now is Scottsdale. But in Cali i'd love to get as close to Huntington beach area/ OC as possible. do you happen to know of any good hospitals around there ?

I worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach. It was a nice place to work, and I still keep in tough with my friends there. They are unioized. Hoag is in Newport Beach, and if also nice, but they are not unionized. I wouldn;t work in a place that was not unionized. Long Beach has a state university, Cal State Long Beach, in case you wanted to go back for a Masters. I earned my BSN there. The tuition in Calfornia is cheap, also.

do you know anything about UCI Medical Center???

UCI has had some legal problems with, I think, their transplant program? The were in the news recently because of this. I believe that they lost their liver transplant program a cojuple of years ago, due to some really big blunders. Again, this was all in the news. I used to know people who worked there, but I don't remember much about them. Cal State Fullerton is close to their, and they have an all RN to BSN program, no generic students.
