CA BON Processing Time

Published

Hello,

I'm a new graduate (RN) and we just moved here in CA. Prior to our move I have already mailed my application/fingerprint to CA BON (May 5th). So far the only thing I have received from them is a conformation that they have received my application. I graduated in NY last month. I have attended a live review course and pretty much reviewing on my own. My question is, what is the processing time in CA? Although I'm not as ready, I still would like to have an idea on how long I have to wait in order to sit in for the NCLEX-RN. Knowing will help me push myself a little harder in studying ang preparing for the board. and also I'd like some idea on how to apply for nursing jobs here in CA. I have called and left a message at the HR in one of the hospitals here in CA but have not heard from them. How do I approach these hospitals. I'm so nervous and worried that I might not land a job in nursing since I'm not a graduate here in CA. Most of my former nursing classmates in NY already have a job or interview lined up even before we graduated. I feel so stressed out! Sorry this is a bit long but any suggestions or word of comfort from you is much appreciated.

Don't hold your breath while waiting for anything from the California BRN. I took the NCLEX on May 9th and still have no results. My school mailed my transcripts on May 18th, and the BRN is telling us that we have to allow two weeks for the transcripts to arrive (they have to travel a whopping 80 miles from here to the BRN offices) and then another two weeks for them to be processed once they arrive.

I don't think they do much of anything quick, unfortunately.

Hi, Jaimee

Thanks for the reply. I actually am a little confused about your reply :stone . You said you took the NCLEX on May 9th but your transcript were mailed on May 18th????? I thought in order for a person to sit in for the NCLEX, the BRN has to have all you paper works including transcripts processed and then the BRN will notify Pearson vue for the ATT??? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, also I went to 2 hospitals here in my town to inquire about a job position, they actually would like to hire me even without my RN yet but I have to have an IP to start. See when I sent my application to CA BRN, I asked BRN if I can obtain an IP but they told me that in order to be given an IP I have to be either employed or I have to have an employer lined up. Then I said not at the moment so they told me that I can't have an IP so I didn't checked the box where it says IP and pay the fee for it. Now I was told by the HR at the hospitals that I can actually have an IP even without an employer. I feel like I got screwed by the BRN. Now, I have to call them to request an IP so that I can start on June 20th (graduate program) otherwise I have to wait until January for these hospitals only do the graduate program twice a year. Any feedback on this?????????

Thanks :uhoh21:

The California BRN will allow you to test without your final transcripts in your file, which makes no sense to me...but whatever :uhoh3: The schools send a roster of candidates whom are expected to graduate, and that is how we get our Notice of Eligibility and then ATT through Pearson Vue.

As for the IPN, I am not sure how that would work. When I sent my application to the BRN, I paid the extra to get my IPN. I think it was $75 extra, but I don't remember for sure.

I have never heard that you have to have an employer to be an IPN..that sounds kinda strange. I know lots of people who have their IPN right now but aren't working.

I would just call the BRN. Cross your fingers that you get one of the helpful, friendly people and not one of the perpetual grumps who act as if they would rather be doing anything other than answering questions! (Can you tell I am just a touch jaded right now????)

Good luck!

Hi! My official school graduation was May 26. The IP was issued to half of our class on May 27. On June 1st, I received the letter from the BRN stating that I am eligible to sit for the exam as long as I registered with Pearson Vue, and my IP would be in the mail to me in the next two weeks. My transcripts were printed at my school on May 31, so I don't know how that works, since they hadn't recieved my transcripts. Now it is just the waiting game to get the ATT and test.

I would keep calling the HR people at the hospitals you are interested in. My entire class of 30, with the exception of 2, had job offers well before graduation.

Hope that helps a little. Keep up the studying!

Hi, again!

I'm actually in southern california...Lancaster to be exact. Oh, also I received an eligibility letter from CA BRN just today...thank God! Now, I have to register with Pearson Vue to get my ATT. You've mentioned that a couple of your friends are doing a CNR program in Modesto...hmnnnn...what exactly is a CNR program (sorry I'mn a little slow)??? is it the same as a new graduate intern program? The ones that I was able to inquire of today (2 differnet hospitals) have a graduate intern program where a new grad will be doing some classroom time and will be assigned to a preceptor in the unit for skills training. I was told that there will be no set time for the orientation but usually takes about 3-4 months or depending on how comfortable I get and my preceptor in releasing me to be on my own ( I hope that's true). One of the program will be in the telemetry unit (which I'm more interested) then the other one is PCU/ICU (I dont' think I'm ready for this as of yet). I'm really nervous and scared. Oh, one more thing you mentioned that you've already sat in for the NCLEX..How was it? Can you recommend a good study/review book that I can use? I currently have Saunders and CD from Drexel (a live course that I recently attended)? I really appreciate you taking the time to interact with me online.

Hi, there!

I actually sort of figured out why you and Jaimee were able to sit in for the exam prior to the BRN receiving your transcripts...I think it's because you guys are California graduates and I'm assuming that all nursing colleges automatically send the BRN some sort of list of graduating nurses. That's how it works in NY too ( so this is how I figured it out)...Oh, what review materials are you currently using in preparation for the NCLEX??? I feel so unorganized and uncertain...I feel like I'm running out of time and patience...I really would like to pass it the first time.....

Hi!

As for review materials, I completed the Hurst Review in April and have been studying the content from that. I also just finished a Kaplan course, and it was great for test strategies. I received a scholarship for the Kaplan - don't know that I would have paid for it out of my own pocket, but it has been helpful. I am also trying to just go through the Saunders CD and doing 100 questions per day. I have this unsettling pit in my stomach everyday that I study though. I feel unorganized too. I just need to crack down and study, study, study!!! What are you doing to study?

Hi Jaimee,

I just want to ask if you finally got your results from the boards? I myself had also taken the boards last Thursday and I am so worried because i answered more than 75 questions. That means they have to give me more questions because I the computer was not sure 95% that I am answering the questions right. I am very anxious to find out because some of my friends found out after 2 days or so. I pray and I hope we passed...All of this trouble will be over, we just have to pray and trust in the LORD. Goodluck and keep us posted.
