butler community college - El Dorado KS

Are you applying to their LPN or RN program. I know that if you are already an LPN you have to have IV certification and nutrition. I never went to the program or applied but I had a few friends do their LPN to RN bridge program and they really liked the program.

I got an A in anatomy and physiology =20, B in English Comp= 9, and A in General psych= 12, and 83 on the TEAS my total score was 124, I didn't get in initially, I got a call back right before semester started. I was told my score was right on the cutoff, which changes from semester to semester depending on what the other applicants scored. I would recommended studying really hard for the TEAS see if you can get a score of at least 94 or more , if not just retake A&p and get an A.

Ok heres the low down on Butler Community College and WSU as far as I have experienced and have knowledge of, these are my opinions and experiences,

Butler GOOOOO GRIZZLY BEARS!!!! I applied to butler a year ago, had my fasfa filled out and sent off and applied for student loans. I took my placements test (which you have to pay out of pocket for) and signed up for my classes. Three weeks before I was to start class I was informed that I would be having to pay out of pocket in 4 installments for my education paying weekly and starting immediatly if I wanted to go to school there. I was also told that I would not be receiving my student loan money or any over payment money from fasfa until the end of the semester (usually end nov beg dec). I was floored! I ended up having to drop out of school, if I had 2K sitting around I wouldnt have applied for fasfa to pay for my schooling. I know other people who are going through butler to do prereqs and AS degrees and they have run into the same problem with having to make payments on their education that was covered and having to wait until the end of the sem to receive their loans and over payments. Its okay starting out if you have the money to pay for your first semester upfront and each semester there after but when you are relying on the government grants and scholarships and loans to help you then you will be running into trouble. The nursing program at butler is AMAZING! Its not easy to get into but I have heard alot of positive feed back from the students who went there and from employers in the community. They train the students well. Its a great school and program if you can afford it. Its also less expensive then WSU, being only around 2-3 grand a semester depending on how many credit hours you will be taking.

WSU! GOOOOO SHOCKERSSS! Yep this is the school I will be starting next fall. They have a highly respected nursing SCHOOL through WSU. A good thing about starting off at WSU is they have a couple of programs to assist you with getting into their nursing program (only 200 positions a year and thousands will apply). You can enroll at WSU as inbound for the BSN and keep a gpa of 3.5 or higher for your 60 prereq hours and pass the entrance exam and you will be given a spot in the program (no wait listing!). They offer everything from the LPN to a doctorate in nursing, with several areas of specialities. Alot of the hospitals and clinics around the wichita area love employing WSU nurses. While the cost of the program is high (200c/h @WSU vs 89c/h @ BCCC) you will have a better chance at getting into the program. I think that WSU has a better program in my personal opinion. The school is located here in wichita and you have a greater chance at a higher education with WSU. I have choosen WSU as the school I will be attending, its worth the extra money for compentency in the program, teachers, knowledge I will gain and confidence I will have once I have achieved my degree.

I would suggest you call both campuses, Butler and WSU and ask for a tour of each area, check out both programs (dont just base you decision on finances either). But look around at all the colleges. Theres also Newman& cowley community is here in wichita too. You can check with them. Newman is a private university, they are the only ones in the area offering Rad Tech degrees (incase your interested in xrays) and cowley is kinda like butler because its a community college but I dont know anything about their application process, degree programs or cost. Friends does not offer any medical programs, so dont waste your time with that. You can do your prereqs there but will have to transfer out to get your degree. They are a PRIVATE college so theres not garentee of admidtance and the cost is much higher.

I would not suggest going to the tech schools around here for any nursing programs. Some offer from a CNA to a LPN program but the credits most often do not transfer, they are expensive, the students that graduate are cookie cutter and have a hard time find job placement. The students from the tech schools usually dont receive very good educations and their comptencies from the teachers and students is low. Heritage College, dispite their name, is not a college but a tech school. They are another cookie cutter run of the mill school that turns out ma's every 6 weeks. I go there cuttently, the teachers are not very knowledgable, the school is extreamly expensive, I am not comptent in the education I am receiving and the job placement for MAs isnt that high of a demand. They will tell you that it is and that the job market is increasing but there is alot of hard compatition out there for ma jobs. Credits dont transfer like other tech schools. They do have job placement programs and financial aide (I would be very wary of their financial aide office and if you do choose to go there read the fine print, cross your t's and dot your i's and keep all of your paper work).

i don't know how much has changed as this is an old answer, but these are the two colleges I'm applying to to start my undergraduate coursework for nursing. So, hoping this is still somewhat true, this helped so much!
