Burnt out and no patience am I in the right job ?

Published

Good evening , I’m writing this as I know others nurses will relate to how I feel . I have been a qualified nurse for coming up to 6 years I was a care assistant prior for 7. This is my 4th post since qualifying, and I completely fed up of nursing . I want to work in a place where patients respect you and you are helping people who want to help themselves. It’s relentless day in and out . I have no patience and really don’t want to be a nurse no more . Is this normal ? Am I burnt out ? Should I consider a different career ? . I am so frustrated and hate being made to call to people just because they have complained or demanded a call , sometimes with no nursing needs . Just to clarify I am a community nurse in the UK.

Have you thought about going back to hospital, to an area where the patients are really sick and need you? (I'd suggest oncology, though that's total bias on my part!)

Maybe your problem stems from people beng at home and on their own territory they are less uncomfortable about being rude, taking you for granted etc. I understand the calls from patients who don't even have nursing needs. I had this as a clinical nurse specialist in the UK. One woman used to ring me for relationaship advice and she wasn't even my patient!

At least in hospital people are sure to have nursing needs, and the sicker dependent patients if not always, are at least most of the time grateful for what you do.
