Hi Everyone,
I'm 24 and already have a couple degrees and currently work in healthcare. I'm strongly considering going into nursing for various reasons. I work in Charlestown, MA and I'm considering doing BHCC's weekend program (or hybrid, as I heard the weekend may be stopping).
Has anyone graduated from this program or is anyone currently in it that could tell me some more about it? How you like it, their reputation in the community etc.
Also, more specifically - how long does it take to complete the program if you do the weekend only option? Assuming all the prerequisites and everything are done beforehand.
Thanks! :)

Hi im in my last semester at bhcc's evening program!! It's taken me about 3 years to finish my adn (including the pre-reqs) the program isn't entirely organized and you'll have to really plan on your own. There are some good teachers in the evening program and some bad ones (as in every program) the program is tough and u'll have to dedicate a good 2-3 hrs a day to suceed. A plus about bhcc is the low tuition rate.. By the time you finish you will be practically debt free. But if you already have a bachelors in another field I would totally suggest getting your bsn somewhere else. As all ADN students practically have to go back to get their bsns after graduation!!!

I graduated from the BHCC program in May 2011. I really liked it. Despite having a prior bachelors degree, I chose the BHCC ADN program because it was less than $10k versus the 40-60k of many accelerated programs. From there, I enrolled in the University of Texas at Arlington online RN-BSN for less than 12k. In total, my ADN and BSN were 3 years but I have been working as an RN since I graduated and managing school on my own time. Total cost is about $22k which I have paid out of pocket over the three years. This is $10k cheaper and 1.5 years less than doing the UMB RN-BSN that many do.
The days program was really good, some teachers are better than others, but I learned a lot and did well. The weekend is doable but you really need to devote time to it everyday. I think this is true no matter what program you do.
Just be prepared to get your BSN immediately. Like the PP mentioned, there is a great initiative to phase out ADN nurses, but the jobs are still there.
Thanks for your advice! It looks like I'll be applying to their 2015 Spring evening program. I just need to re-take my Anatomy I and Algebra courses since they are a little low. I am hoping to take those this summer (hopefully I can balance it with working full time) and then apply. This fall I'm going to try to knock out microbiology as it is the only co-requisite I haven't completed.
Did anyone work full time while in the program? I noticed that the second semester there is about 20 hours a week for lecture/lab/clinicals...it seems like it would be almost impossible but I'm hoping to stay working.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you score on your TEAS? I'm trying to get an idea of what score I should have to fall into the top 30 that they select.
Do you remember what your TEAS scores were? I'm taking mine in a week and I'm hoping to get an 80...but I'm wondering if anyone is accepted with scores in the 70s.
Second semester is far and away the worst. Have a plan in place for if you need to cut back on work. Many people failed because they didn't have contingency plans in place.
I scored very high on the TEAS - maybe like high 80s to high 90s depending on subject. I got the TEAS practice book and worked through the entire book cover-to-cover the day before the test. It was an excellent refresher. Plus, it contains information, such as on tectonic plates and such, that were on the exam.

I applied for the Spring 15 semester and I see online on the portal it says
Active Academic ProgramCatalog
AA.GENCN General Concentration
2013/14 Academic Calendar (my past concentration)
and
AS.NRDAY Nursing Program, Day Option
2014/15 Academic Calendar
Does this mean I got in? Does anyone else see this? I am not sure if it means I got in, or if it is just showing up because I last semester I did a degree evaluation for nursing. Anyone know?

I noticed my student profile changed from general con to nursing evening.program with a Jan 2017 graduation date. I called the school hoping they could tell me something, but they said nobody has been accepted yet. It is very stressful waiting for this letter. Please let us know if you find out if this means anything

There are two areas of the portal... one that says what you applied to and one that has the current program that you have been accepted to. If there is an expected graduation date then you should be all set. (Unless they have changed it within the last 6 months) I believe the one that you want to be looking at is your academic profile and not your program evaluation. The program evaluation will allow you to look at anything that you have previously applied to but the academic profile has what is current.
@MBrickle - could I private message you? I'd like to hear more about your experience with an ASN and other Bachelors...job prospects etc. and how you felt during the ASN-BSN phase. I got into BHCC for January and the price there is so much easier to accept than other schools (simmons, mgh, etc).

MBrikle. I just read this old post and wondering how Uni of Texas was!? I'm currently in my third semester at BHCC and researching at the minute for my BSN. I'm going to graduate in December so I am planning to take summer classes like nutrition that I may need for my BSN. How was the process of transferring credit to Texas? simple or not?
Thanks so much!
