1. Your friend should definitely choose a topic that directly relates to the field in which she wants to work after graduation. A senior thesis is the type of project that you can put on your resume and that will help you stand out from the other applicants as you apply for a job. Having done a senior thesis in a related specialty will help your friend get a good job in that field.

2. Your friend should meet with her faculty advisor to discuss possible topics -- paying lots of attention to the resources available and the requirements of the assignment.

3. Your friend should arrange to meet with a specialist in the field that interests her -- to get some ideas on relevant topics. She should also spend a few hours browsing the nursing literature related to her area of interests. That should also give her some ideas of topics that are needed in that field.

After doing all that homework, she should meet again with her thesis advisor to discuss what she learned through the homework and start to narrow down her "general ideas" to specific topics that are both:

(a) relevant to her area of interest for future jobs

(b) meet the school requirements for the assignment

She should not be just picking "any old topic." The selection of an appropriate topic is a part of the research process -- and she should approach that part of the project in a systematic way designed to help her pick a good topic.

I just completed research last semester. I chose a topic that I really found interested me and could benefit me in my profession: End-of-Life Care. What we had to do was write an analysis of 8 different journal articles and then critique one of them. The topic should be something that you find interesting or you are going to have a hard time.
