BSN graduate and RN from Philippines who migrated to CA and plans to take CA NCLEX

Published

Hi,

I am a BSN graduate of San Beda College last 2007 and became a Registered Nurse in the Philippines and I migrated here with my family in CA two years ago (2014). I have not applied for NCLEX yet because I have heard from some colleagues that foreign BSN graduates who applied for CA BRN are now required to take additional coursework to be eligible. And i don't want to pay for all those application fees only to find out that it might get denied. It's been almost 10 years since i got my degree so I really plan on taking up refresher courses but there is none close to where I live. So I plan to go back to school and take RN Step Up Program (30 unit option) which a college nearby offers, in that way I can just sit in NCLEX directly and hopefully become RN. But i have concerns because (1) it may just downgrade my level of education from BSN to ADN (Associate degree of Nursing), (2) I am not sure if it is the smartest thing to do. By the way, I just had my college transcripts evaluated by IERF (International Education Research Foundation) and based on the report, the level of education that I have in the Phils is the same level and purpose as the BSN here in the United States. Does anyone here have the same issue? I need some advice on what's the best thing to do at this time. Thanks in advance!
