B's in the non-sciences (retake?)

Published

Hey all, this is my first post to these forums so let me start off by introducing myself.

I am a 28 y/o male

I made the decision to shift from my career and study of psychology to emergency medicine roughly 2 years ago.

I enrolled in an EMT course with goals of becoming a flight medic in the future.

I've been an EMT (and also got hired in my local hospital's emergency department as an ER tech) for a little over a year.

Recently, after some consideration, I've decided that obtaining my RN to become a flight nurse instead would be a better option (and provide me with a little more flexibility in healthcare).

That's me in a nutshell (feel free to ask me any questions). Now onto my concern. My local college has a point-based system for admission called Sequence One Pre-Reqs which consist of Human A&P, English 101, Psych 101 and Nursing 106. Too much time has passed for my Bio and Chem from back in the day to count so I'll have to take them over again (no big deal) before I can take A&P. There's no limit on Eng and Psych and I received Bs in them and Nursing 106 is something I could take concurrently to petitioning for admission. Should I go out of my way to retake the English and Psych to get As and net an overall 4 more points to my potential score or put my focus into aceing the sciences/pre-nursing course before petitioning?

Hi! My college has the similar point system. I too received some B's in gen eds, because they BORE me. Lol. I aced all my sciences. The way my school works is they go by GPA with Sciences weighing more. Then TEAS, then any medical experience.

Instead of going back right now and retaking the classes you got a B in, get ALL the pre-req's done first and focus on A's in those. Apply, and if you dont make it in first round, retake the B classes and reapply.

Retaking will just prolong your wait time so better to submit as is and see what happens!

Good luck to you!

Congrats on deciding to get your RN! I'm in a similar boat, where my biology was too old to count. (Which makes no sense to me...) I did find a workaround for that, which required me to attend two schools at the same time.

one option - since you need to repeat BIO Is take that at your school first. See what grade you get in that class before deciding to spend the extra money to bring up the other grade(s). If you get a good grade and continue to do so where nursing prereqs are concerned then you might be able to still get a desirable GPA. Another option that is similar to what I did, is find an online class (important to add that it needs a lab, then call your school and ask if they'll accept that class from that school) for A&P that doesn't require BIO as a prereq, (or doesn't limit how old it is) take A&P there, and transfer back.

For me personally, I am paying more for this decision and based on the schools application, the points from the gpa don't have as much an impact on my score as the HESI I have to take does. The reason I'm doing it this way - it saves me two semesters of school required before I can even apply to the RN program. To me the time is worth more than the money.

Good luck in your endeavors!

It depends on how many people apply. My school also does a point system. A&P I and II were given the most points, I think 30 each if you got As and English 111 and Psych 101 were 15 points a piece. I think if you got Bs in any your score difference was 5 points for each. I know in my cohort many people had all As. I've talked to a couple who had 1 B. One of my best friends had 2 Bs and had to go to the LPN program. But her 2 Bs were in the A&P classes. If you have an entrance exam, do really well on it to make up the 4 points. But it really comes down to how many people are applying to your program and what their grades are.
