I just received a denial letter from the BRN. I am interested to know what I should include in the appeal letter. I have turned in all the required documents, rehab, the whole nine yards. Can anyone shed some light on this topic?

When I submitted my letter, I included a summation of my life history and what I did to correct my past errors. I included my education, reference letters, jobs I held, and I subtly included the fact that I would never commit a crime or anything illegal ever again. That I am a responsible adult and the person that used to be is no more.

Basically trying to tell them, "Hey, I was a kid, young and irresponsible. But I'm a human being, I make errors, and I learn from those mistakes. I can be counted on now and I have the capability to be a responsible nurse."

From my understanding, the appeal letter is basically a formal request to appeal the decision. The additional mitigating evidence is provided during negotiations. In my own experience, the board wouldn't negotiate with me. I was lucky enough to obtain a pro bono lawyer to assist me and they were able to get the board to budge on a lot of the probationary terms (the ones that are very expensive). I would get a letter from your physician ruling out substance abuse and substance related illnesses, if your crime is substance related. Otherwise then maybe something declaring you physically competent to be a nurse. Also a mental or substance abuse evaluation by a psychologist, addictionologist, or licensed counselor.
