I am looking for current bowel and bladder retraining protocols to use on a neuro rehab unit. Where can the most updated info be found?

Specializes in most of them.

I wasn't really aware that there was something new to do for this

Medications change of coures, but really it involves ridgid timed bowel programs, toileting every 2 hrs to void, intermittent straight caths( Isc, staff, or family) according to schedule, fluid restricition. Everthing needs to be tweaked to fit the particular patient of course.

Good luck

The protocols depend on what the patient is experiencing, and the diagnosis... spinal cord patients have different needs then CVA patients, etc.

Timing and regularity of treatment is always a plus... start with pre-morbid habits and go from there... sometimes a timed void program is all that is needed, sometimes intermittent straight caths.

For bowel, you need to look at fluid and hydration, diet, neurological status...

There is a recipe that helps with plain old constipation.

1 cup all-bran

1 cup applesauce

1/2 cup prune juice

cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.

Mix together, refrigerate. This turns into a pudding like dish... give 2 or 3 tablespoons once or twice a day...

This really is helpful, especially with the older adult patients...

Hope this helps...
