Does anyone know the shift differentials at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, VA?

For anyone who'd like to know, there is no weekend differential. Only night shift. $4/hr for the first 4 hours and $6/hr for the remaining 8 hours. Base pay $25. I interviewed this week at Bon Secours as well as Sentara Heart Hospital. Sentara is $9/hr for nights and weekend. Base pay $25. I received an offer from Bon Secours and am awaiting an offer from Sentara. I shadowed for 4 hrs there last night (7pm-11pm). Anywho, I sure wish the pay was better in this area. Might be time to pack and leave Hampton Roads VA.

Hi there! That’s disappointing to hear. Was that base pay based on experience? You’re not a new grad, are you?

Base pay for new grad. BSN with 4 years LPN experience. $25! Turns out Sentara's nights/weekend shift differential relayed to me by the Nurse Recruiter was incorrect. Sentara's pay for nights is $4. There is no weekend shift differential. I received an offer from Sentara but declined. I ended up going with Bon Secours.

How do you like bon secours maryview so far?

Only speaking on the 3rd floor, I really enjoy working in the ICU! The other nurses are very helpful and always open to showing you new things! The Unit Manager is amazing. I am assigned a preceptor whom I'll follow for the next 6 months ( I only have 2.5 months left on orientation). Orientation for new grads in ICU is 6 months. Although I follow my preceptor's schedule, if a day she's working doesn't work for me, I can always work with another preceptor to ensure I'm not missing any of my ICU experience. ( However, my preceptor's schedule works perfect for me!). I did 1 month on day shift (to get adjusted to working with physicians and other healthcare team members that are usually not there at night) and have been on night shift since (I applied for night shift). Although I live close to several Sentara Hospitals, they wouldn't allow new grads in ICU until at least 6 months of experience as an RN in Med-surg. Due to my future plans of being a CRNA, I accepted the position at Maryview so that I could start preparing for Grad school. On the other hand, I live in the Virginia Beach area so I'm always driving to Portsmouth. I do plan to work there for a year minimum and then apply to Sentara because it's much closer to home.

Hey. I wonder if things changed because Sentara pay 4 dollars for night and 6 for weekends. I'm looking to apply to Mary View as well. They have a psych position open and it's my goal to become a psych np. Are the pay differentials the same for nights/weekends? Any tips about the interview process or actually working at Mary View/Bon Secours

Good day,

Congrats on your career choice! Good luck to you! (Mine is CRNA/Psych NP is my 2nd if CRNA school is a "dud" down the line...LOL). Anywho, I interviewed at Sentara last year and unless it changed since last Summer, it was $4 night shift diff with no weekend diff. (That would be awesome if they did!). I interviewed at Sentara Norfolk Cardiac Surgical IMCU. I really wanted to work in ICU so I chose Maryview. I work nights and shift diff is $6 whether on a weekend or not. If you do end up working on the weekend, it's an additional 0.75. Like most hospitals, yes staffing can be short. However, the upside to that is you're able to pick up as many shifts as you'd like. (Endless opportunities) On most units, additional $6.25 if you pick up an additional shift and if you are able to come in on a really short night, they will usually double or triple your additional shift incentive. So base pay+night diff+weekend diff+$6.25(X's 2 or 3). As a new grad (not sure if you are a new grad) starting in ICU, the extra money helped. (P.S. If you have a BSN even with no experience, request an additional $1 on top of base pay for that...hint hint). I received an additional $1 on top of base pay at 6 months. They do give annual bonuses and pay raises. But please don't burn yourself out. The interview process was straight forward. Very low stress interview. Hate to sound cliche but "just be yourself". They really like talk about patient advocacy. My interview was less than 10 mins. Received call maybe 2 hours later for job offer for ICU and CVT Step-down Unit. But again, money's nice to have but don't burn yourself out because they are short-staffed on some floors often. Don't feel obligated to say "yes" if you are new to the floor when asked about coming in to help out on days with staffing shortages. Sorry if I rambled to much. Hope I helped answer some of your questions!
