Birth Control and High Blood Pressure

Published

Hi everyone. I am a 24 year old who has been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I have been on the pill for 6 years. My doctor has been watching my blood pressure for the last 2 yrs because it was high. When I went for my physical in Dec. 09, I saw the NP. She put me on lynsiapril 2.5mg. At my check up my blood pressure was 139/88. I argued with her that I think it was my birth control. In 08 I changed from the pill to the nuvo ring and my blood pressure was normal. I did not like the nuvo ring because it kept coming out and got back on the pill. That is when my blood pressure went up again. I went to the doctor today. I am on my mentral cycle for 4 days, so I am not taking the pill and I was out of my blood pressure med for 3 days. They did not give me any refills and had me wait til my appt. I know, I need a new doc. I will get into that later. I hate them and will be changing soon. But back to my blood pressure. My blood pressure today was 124/88. My fiance who is a RN and I argued with the NP about this because I haven't been on it and it was lower. I took my blood pressure at the pharmacy last Sunday and it was 137/90. So obviously something is up. I think it is the pill which is causing my blood pressure to be high. High blood pressure does run in my family. My mom has it. However, I know from her that the reason she got it was from the pill as well and her doctor put her on high blood pressure pills to control it. I am engaged and getting married in a few months. I know children are not in our future for a while since I want to go back to school but it can be an option to get off the pill if this is going to benefit me health wise.

What are your opinions. Please give me advise!!!!!

We can't provide medical advice. All I will say is that untreated hypertension is one of the leading causes of renal failure.

I would take the physician's advice or seek a second opinion.
