okay so i want t shout out to all the the boys and girls taking the final on friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we've come a long way together its been a real pleasure. some of us got along real good, and some not so good. in the big scheme of things i think we are all going t make kickass nurses. i had a pinning speech but it didn't get picked, i'm glad m. got picked though, she's a great person...so i'm putting mine it here...

we could begin by talking about florence nitengale and all that she did for the profession of nursing, or about this 'chapter in our lives.' instead i would like to talk about careplans. yes the good old adpie.

for most of us we assessed our situations in life, our families, our jobs our homes (future homes). we looked at all the subjective data, as well as the objective data.

we came up with the diagnosis: i need a job!!! r/t: my current and future needs. aeb: my lack of cash (those darn kids just keep growing out of all those clothes i just bought!!)

so we set a plan into action. we researched schools, prerequisites, costs; yes we looked at all our options. we looked into bsn vs. adn, private schools and public schools. we found out that our plan was going to have to be long term (3 year waiting list). that didn't deter us from our expected outcome: nursing student will graduate from nursing school and acquire a job in chosen profession of nursing by end of nursing program. (remember e.o. has to be time specific and measurable)

so we all went through the interventions:

1. can you say crash the perquisites that are all impacted at every community college and universities and home school and high school, trust me i tried. got those done then we had to apply to the nursing program, but we had to think way ahead, beg, bribe, cajole instructors (i tried that too), to turn in grades early so you can rush those transcripts over to the nursing office.

2. with hands shaking, tachycardia, hyperventilating, pupil constriction, gi upset, dry mouth we walked into the nursing office with all our paperwork, anxious and excited and gave our paper work to christine. we stood there with a goofy grin and actually expected by some miracle of god that she would say "great you start next term." and kindly she said you should be hearing from us soon.

3. so we with bradycardia, hypoventilating, pupil dilation, and gi upset we walked back to our cars and thought now what. for some of us our next intervention was to get a job in healthcare that would at least give us exposure to medicine.

4. and then probably the most important of all interventions: call the nursing office every hour and ask christine if god has intervened yet, and the doors of nursing school would be opened up to you. (no such luck, god was busy)

the big evaluation of our plan came the day we got that letter that said congradulations, you have been assigned to begin nursing school...so we knew: plan met...continue with care plan.

so we showed up half not knowing the other half and we were told us "look around, 20% will not graduate with you." here comes the tachycardia again.

we gave ourselves over to our plan more than ever, we read, we wrote, we complained, we got tested, we cried, we got gi distress...

throughout all this we made friends, we lost friends. our character was tested and tested, our determination was tried and strengthened. while our e.o. never changed our perspective may have.

we found that nursing is so much more than a job; it's more than a career. it's about people, and not just the ones we take care of. nursing involves family, and not just our patient's family but our own families.

what we do for our patients and family will never be forgotten by them. they may forget all the 'teaching' we do but they will never forget that we held their hand while they were sick.

those parents will never forget that you cared for their sick child because work situations didn't allow them to sit vigil at their bedside.

those expected parents whose pregnancy went way wrong will never forget you were there listening, handing them a box of tissue as the most devastating news was given to them.

that man or woman won't forget that you helped them when they were honoring the final wishes of their father or mother.

i will never forget the laughs, the tears, the tests, the teachers, the friends i've made during this careplan we called nursing school.

it has been an honor to have known each and every one of you, and am proud to call myself a ********* college nursing graduate
