I am thinking about going back to school to get my ADN. I already have my elem. ed degree-Thanks to those of you that posted on my last thread! I have two children, 8mo and 21mo. What is the best thing about nursing school and the worst??

Thanks

Nursing school bests...

I would have to say...the other students. You'll not find more supportive people and friends! And learning new experiences and doing new things. You'll learn things you never even would have SUSPECTED could have existed!

Nursing school worsts...

All the studying with such very fast paced "you have to know this NOW" objectives.

All of the do or die tests we have to endure. If we fail one by even one point, we're out of the program and have to reapply for next year. So if we make it all the way through school and have a bad day with say, dosage calc in the last week of school, and fail one of the tests (must be an 85% or above), we're out of the entire program. Just spent an entire year of our lives for nothing. It's scary.

But then again, nursing is scary, but so worth it!;)

Good Luck to you!

Julie:)

Bests:

Feeling like you actually made a difference in someone's life, and helped a total stranger. Feeling like "this is the place I belong". Finding your favorite clinical rotation and falling in love with the setting (and its even better when you get a job offer in that area---ER here I come! I start May 28th).

Worst:

Having a patient that you thought would be able to pull through, only to die on the next shift. All of the tests that must be passed the 1st time, or you're out of the program. Being eaten by bitter old nurses on a power trips. Starting IVs on babies... I still have a hard time with that, i hate to make them cry.

All in all, this is 1,2,3,4 years of your life (depending on prep-level), and then many more years of practice. The trials and tribulations of nursing school are short term, although they may not feel like it. Finding a career that fits you, and that you enjoy for years is worth it :)

My grandma always told me that if I find a job I enjoy, ill never have to "work" a day in my life. I hope she is right (but she usually is:) )

Good luck no matter what you decide,
