Learn to leave your work at work!

In order for you to be PRODUCTIVE in work, reward yourself REGULARLY. Rewards such as taking a month vacation, spend time with friends and family, buy your favorite item, feed cats/dogs in the streets, share to the people who need help.

Rewarding yourself DOES NOT always mean YOU and YOURSELF only, mind the others surrounding you. You will be MORE HAPPY if you share your HAPPINESS to OTHERS.

Treat the patient, not the monitor.

Be open to ALL new experiences.

If you feel yourself getting burned out, seek out other nursing opportunities. Even if it means less pay, find somewhere that you can work and be happy.

Learn to laugh at things and don't sweat the small stuff

Be a patient advocate. Try to think about their care. Why do they have this lab ordered, this medication ordered, this test ordered, etc? If it doesn't make sense ask why. It could be ordered in error, you could learn something new, you may save resources ($$$), and you may even save a life.

CYA at all times. The best way to do this is document, document, document.

Understand that healthcare is all about change. You must adapt to these changes. The policies, procedures, EMR, medications, and basics of care today will certainly change. It may be today, tomorrow, or the next month, but accept it will change.

You can never have too many pens.

Always listen to your gut feeling.

Learn all you can about your speciality, no matter what it is. Join a professional organization in your speciality. Look up meds or diagnosis you aren't familiar with. Learn from your colleagues and providers. Feeling competent in the care you provide feels great!

And also, learn how to take good care of yourself. Your can't take great care of your patients unless you are also taking great care of yourself!
