I have had several teachers that went out of their way to help their students. My medterm teacher would stay after to show us tricks to remember words that were making us crazy. My anatomy and physiology summer Professor, stays two days a week beyond his required teaching time to help students that want to be helped. He says, "If you put in the extra work, so will I." Does anyone else have a story to share about their favorite teacher or professor that has gone out of their way to help you to understand things... or a teacher that has been an inspiration... or a teacher that you couldn't have gone without? :redpinkhe

My A&P II professor has been my favorite so far. I didn't always LIKE him, mind you - there were times I wanted to throttle him. He would sometimes get angry with us if we had a hard time understanding physiology, but he would go out of his way to help us. He used lab time to go over lecture with us more in depth, because he felt that was more important to us than dissecting a cat. He was also the teacher for mortuary A&P for the mortuary science program, and so he arranged a trip for us to their lab to have a look at one of the cadavers that those students had prepared. Again, he felt this would be more informative to us, as none of us were "going to be working on cats" when we graduate. He had been a dentist before teaching, but hadn't found that to be satisfying. He chose our small cc to teach so that he could actually teach and not be tied up in research.
I saw him months after I had his class, and he asked how my friends and I from his class were. I told him we were about to start med surg and were worried about fluids and electrolytes. He told me that if any of us needed help to come see him and he would help any way that he could.
He was a very tough teacher, and his tests were hard, but I felt like I had a good understanding of the subject by the time we were done. When we go over some of the harder stuff in our nursing classes, my friend and I that had his class will look at each other and say, "Thank you, Dr. K!" We seem to have more understanding than some of our peers that didn't have his class.
I nominated him for an award for outstanding professor for an academic organization that I belong to, and he got the award. I was so happy!

I had the same teacher for A&P 1, 2 and Micro. This woman was amazing, she got us totally immersed in the subjects. Since my school is on the quarter system, this was an entire academic year. Having the same teacher was great, she really pulled all 3 classes together, building on prior knowledge. The tests were killer hard. I am proud to say I got A's in all 3, and my knowledge base is covered. Ready for the clinical program this fall!!

I don't start the nursing program till August but my favorite teacher so far has been my Calculus teacher. I have never seen a teacher go more out of her way for students than she did. Every semester she would have each student meet with her to discuss their futures. She was always available no matter what time it was to help us. Her level of excitement made you want to learn and never did a student want to disappoint her. She has been the hardest teacher I have had and I spent hours every night doing problems. I even took Calc 2 which I didn't need just because she acted disappointed when I said I might not take it. I will really miss her.

I loved my Anatomy professor. He was so funny and helpful, and really cares about his students. He would even open the lab for us on weekends so that we could study.
I think getting good grades in the prereq's is great, but unfortunately it doesn't always translate to clinical practice. I go to school with people who had all A's in their pre-nursing courses but are lacking clinically. Luckily I have a good balance with the theory/clinical.
I've had some pretty good nursing professors, too. Good luck to those of you who haven't started NS yet - it's rough but goes by very quickly!
