Best nursing job for parent

Published

I started job and on orientation period and have been working M-F 10-12hr days plus every other weekend call and four days a week of call regularly. Of course that was not told to me on my interview. So I hate my schedule and not really liking my job now. Is PRN best option as far as being able to work and have a life with my small child and infant? Or better area of nursing that offers better scheduling? Right now, I have no time with my new baby and young son. Also my husband takes call and our call days have conflicted and my charge seems unwilling to work with me but my husband Charge is willing to work with me but puts schedule out day before new one is due..so no time to plan.

I personally have found per diem scheduling to be the simplest way to manage my family responsibilities. To get where I am, I did work full time in nursing for 3 years (2 on my current unit), was fortunate enough to be able to go to a per diem schedule in my department (budget issue, not every manager is willing or able to take on per diem staff).

I am able to work weekends, where the pay is better and my husband is able to take on the childcare without us having to use paid childcare. Nights are popular with parents too. The schedule is flexible enough that I can pick up extra hours when I need extra money or have extra time, and when I need time off, I simply don't schedule myself to work.

This would not be possible without my husband having a job with good health insurance coverage, and enough pay to carry us through the low census times where per diem staff gets cancelled frequently.

If you are an experienced nurse, take a look at per diem as an option.

Yes I have experience. Forgot to mention husband works PRN but full time hours. I thought about buying insurance if went PRN.
