Hello, all! I am currently halfway to becoming an RN (I graduate with my associate's in Spring 2017). Nursing school is a stepping stone to midwifery school for me. I'm currently located in South GA, but hubby and I plan on moving to Washington State after graduation. Does anyone have any advice on what schools I should start really looking into? Has anyone ever attended Frontier? If so, how did you find a preceptor in your area? Thank you in advance for your help!

Congrats on almost being done with nursing school! My advice is to look in to different midwifery schools- you have to find what works best for you and your family. Frontier worked great for me since in SC there are no other options. It was also very affordable (more so than other online schools)- which was a high priority for me. I also worked part time through out the whole program- so a distance learning program fit best. Finding a preceptor is the hardest part of the school- they give you a list of preceptors used in the past- and you also have a regional facility member that can help assist you- Start looking and cold calling from day one! I cold called numerous offices- and eventually one said ok- it can work! Good luck on your move and enjoy the cooler weather in Washington!

It depends on how you learn best and how quickly you want to make your way to Washington. Next door in Portland, OHSU has an excellent program. Seattle University is pretty good as well. Also on the east coast is the preeminent program in the country at UCSF. Frontier is also great if you can excell as an independent learner in an online setting. They have a large network of alumni and other clinicans across the country to precept so some of the daunting task of arranging clinicals is alleviated. I'd be very hesitant to consider any of the other distance programs unless you have a strong network of local providers who could serve as preceptors. Also, if I remember correctly, Washington is one of the states that requires programs without a campus in the state to be approved. Something that could be an issue with a distance program (Frontier has approval in every state I believe).
Best of luck!
