Being a tutor, good idea or not?

Published

Is there anybody here that either tutors students (pre-nursing) or has made use of a tutor during their pre-req classes? I had a phone call yesterday from my community college. Apparently my micro professor (I took it last semester) put my name forward, and they offered me a six-hours-a-week job as a tutor in "the sciences." I was shocked, flattered, and flustered, and I turned it down, citing a full schedule. He said I was free to change my mind and get back in touch with them.

Now I'm having second thoughts and wonder if it might be an interesting thing to do, and it's not a lot of hours. I didn't get into NS for this fall (same school), but I will be doing a pretty accelerated 8-credit EMT course instead, at the same school but in the evenings.

Any thoughts about what it might entail, advice about whether or not to do it, etc.? The previous semester my A&P II professor asked me if I would be interested, but my schedule was REALLY full at that time, and I was hoping I would actually be in NS this fall, so I said "no," and she did not put my name forward. Think they're trying to tell me something? LOL!

Great advice, everyone. Thanks. I think I'll give the school a call and find out a bit more about how the system is set up there. I do have one more question for you guys in the meantime--does tutoring typically involve prep work in addition to the quoted hours, as being an actual teacher would? I'm hoping no, or not much. :typing

If it's a scheduled session and I know what the topics will be, I do go ahead and refresh myself on the material. But again, as a tutor, it's not your job to have all the answers....it's your job to help the students find the answers.

Just thought I'd let you guys know what I decided, given the great advice you all gave about whether or not to become a tutor. It turns out it would involve five, count 'em, five trips to the school when I would not otherwise be there--an hour round trip each time (think money not earned at my decently paying job AND cost of gas). It would mean sitting in on every class and lab for the semester and taking notes as if I were a student, then being available for any questions any of the students in the class might have. Also provide an hour a week outside class time for any students who wanted to get together. All this for 6 hours pay per week at, get this, $8 an hour. To top it all, once I found out who the professor would be I checked him out at ratemyprofessor.com. Let's just say, it's NOT gonna happen!

Still--it's nice to have been asked, and I thank you all again for your help. :thankya:

I'm glad you took the time to investigate it before making a decision, Scooter. I'll bet you're glad, too!

But as you say ... it was nice to be asked.
