Being a RT & a RN?

Published

Hi guys, Im new. Im a 29yo female looking to go back to school. I was a very successful Realtor for years and loved my job! Recently doctors have decided that I have Cushings Disease caused by a pit tumor. Going through this has really put things into prespective. I want to be able to help people and really would like to be either an RN or a RT. Here in Michigan there is a 3-5 year wait just to get into the RN program. I am no spring chicken and have a family, so waiting that long before going to school is just not an option. So, I was considering becoming an RT (no real wait), and just getting on the list. When they call my name I then have the option of going back to school for an RN. So, just wondering is there a benefit of having both? What is your input?

I guess what I was thinking was going to school for RT and completing the 2 courses I would need to get on the nursing list. Like I said earlier.....its a 3-4yr wait, at schools in my area (west michigan). So I would be getting my RT and working a year before I could get accepted into RN program (which is associates). I was hoping to do 2yr program and then do more schooling as needed while employed.

Or I can take all of the non nursing classes required for assoc. RN while Im waiting on the list: (eng102, anth103,bios, psyc, ect) which is about 35 credits. But is there any jobs I can do while Im waiting? Wonder if I can get phelbotimist cert and do that to bring in $$ while waiting for opening. So hard to believe we have such a shortage of nurses and its 3yrs just to get into school...crazy

i understand that the shortage is nursing instructors--that is why the wait. Hard to believe the supply/demand laws that we live under don't apply here!!:banghead:
