Being late for classes in nursing program....

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

I'm currently taking classes at Ivy Tech right now. I hope to be able to apply to the nursing program by Fall 2011.

I was just wondering. Today, I was like 10 minutes late for one of my classes. I didn't suffer from it, but I have been thinking all day long today. What if I'd been in the program. Would I have been kicked out of the program for being late like that.

I have heard stories of the instructors locking the doors to their classes on time and anyone who was not in class were forced to miss the entire class session.

I imagine that you'd get like 1 MAYBE 2 chances to be late before you lost serious participation points.

Can anyone reinforce my concerns for this. If you are in Ivy Tech's nursing program. Do you know students who were late to the nursing program.

Also please use this thread to post warnings or stories that you have witnessed from being in the program.

Like how the instructors treated the students.

First day on clinical or the classes.

I want to get into the Gary campus, if anyone is in their particular program please post any information on that.

Thank you.

Well for my school, my instructor allows ones "freebie", if it happens again she implements the misconduct policy which is sort of like being written up at your job, only it involves meeting with the dean and implementing a plan. They give you a couple chances after that, but each time you have to meet with someone, before you're dismissed. IMO, you might get chances, but it doesn't make a good impression to your instructor.

For clinicals, if you're 30 minutes late, you're dismissed for the day and it's counted as an abscence. If you're continually late, but not within the 30 minute range, then you face the whole write up situation. You're allowed two abscences for clinicals, then you're dismissed from the program.

In one of my classes, if you are not there in the first five minutes, you are considered absent(yes, they do take role, they use the i-clicker) and every time you are absent they will deduct 15% of your grade(ouch!) The other class they didn't really say, but I am very scared to try it out. However, if you are late at all to clinicals, you are dismissed and you have an absent. If you have more than two excused absents(that means you are in the hospital very ill)then you get kicked out of the nursing program. I live 1.5 hours away, and have to drive on a two lane road the entire way(I live in the middle of nowhere). I leave a lot earlier than need be, just for the just in case something goes wrong. There are a few people in my class that come in late all the time for lecture...that is so frustrating for the rest of us. One person has already been late twice to clinicals(but he wasn't sent home...if he does it again see ya!) Be at least 10 minutes early and be prepared, it will be noticed! good luck!
