Becoming a Labor and delivery nurse

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hello everyone,

I am new student nurse at University I will be finished by next August 22,2003 . I am really interested in becoming a labor and delivery nurse however I have been looking at the job openings for labor and delivery nurses and they want you to have at least one year of experience. I would like to know how would I be able to do this as a new nurse? Any information would be helpful. Thank you Mesha

I also entered nursing school with intentions of becoming an L&D nurse. My senior year in school, I went to work in OB as a nursing extern. I got to use my skills that I had already been taught in school. When it came time to apply for jobs, noone wanted to hire a new grad in L&D. So I went to my second choice (NICU). I had already been hired and was waiting for my start date in NICU, when my manager in OB came to me and asked if I would like to stay and work in L&D. I was so excited I put in a 4 week notice that I would not be going to NICU, and as soon as I graduated I started in L&D. I think getting my foot in the door as an extern is the only way in heck I would ever have gotten into OB as a new grad.!! :) If any hospitals have an extern program try that! It sure helped me.! I have been in L&D for 3 months now (just graduated last Dec.) and I LOVE IT!!!
