becoming a cna

Published

hello, I am new to this nursing forum and i have a couple of questions mind u i am a premed student not a nursing student. I was just wondering how do u become a cna and what does the job entail in terms of duties. I ask because I want to volunteer which is a requirement for medical schools and I actually want to have patient interaction not just run errands. Also another thing in terms of gross factor do i have to deal with feces and what not. Thanks I appreciate any of your responses

It just amazes me how some people totally DEMAND respect when they have done NOTHING to EARN it and then get upset when you don't tell them what they WANT to hear!!!

Menial work eh?? Yes.. I have wiped up feces, vomit and other secretions. I really didn't look at it as menial. I have also wiped up the brains of a 17 yr old that was shot point blank in the head so that his parents didn't have to see his brains oozing out his ears. Besides wiping up "gross" stuff..I have defibrillated more than one pt while transporting them to the ICU (WHY do they ALWAYS do that!!?), I have been part of the code team, pushing life saving drugs. I have lavaged many a teen that felt that life was just too difficult to bear...I have dealt with sore throats and runny noses. I have done more than my share of sexual assault exams..one on a 89 yr old and one on a 6 yr old. I have prepped people for surgery and I have helped families through taking their loved one off the vent...In my opinion, not one of those "menial tasks" were more important than the other...I did them all because that is what being a nurse is all about..I am guessing you have no plans to do trauma medicine since 90% percent of the time the docs were right there with us...Healthcare is about teamwork being able to write an order with no one to carry it out is useless..there are some docs that do not treat nurses with much respect but in my experience they have been the miniority. We have a symbiotic relationship.....Nurses can and will make a doctor's life much harder if he or she so desires..I have seen it, something you may want to keep in mind if you ever do become an MD....:)

All right, maybe this guy (are we sure it's a guy?) is a troll. But, I have to put in a plug for "professional" staff rolling in the trenches. As a clinical psychologist (now going back to school for an MSN) I have gained an incredible amount of credibility with direct care staff (I work at a state institution) because I share with them that I have been a CNA and I am not afraid to shower people, clean up vomit, etc. and pitch in where needed. I vote strongly for MD's, PA's, NP's, PT's, Rt's, PhD's, RN's and all health-connected professional to walk a mile in the line staff's shoes.

okay once again I did not say medicine is not gross but as a career it is not as gross as nursing. Like you said there are many type of doctors and alot of them do not have to deal with the gross factor compared to nurses. Jesus I dont understand people on this forum I ask one question and my head is almost bitten off first in the school nursing forum then here. I am sorry if I offended any one but the fact of the matter is nursing deals with alot more gross things than Medicine. Thanks for totally ignoring my question to defend nursing.

Wait until you take gross anatonomy and human physiology during your first year med. If you cant handle gross things, you'd better leave now. Cause that class will put you out immediatley when you are cutting on cadavres in any way you can possibly think. Oh, and you stink of fermaldehyde for weeks on end. Better get a roommate who is in med school as well. Cause nobody else will be able to stand the odor from your clothes and personal being after a few weeks. I kid you not. Think about it.

I don't know why yo think you can come onto a NURSING forum and ask how you can volunteer as a CNA. You actually have to pass an exam by the state to learn how to "clean up feces". We obviously do more than that.

Hi, I work as a CNA and I am a full time nursing student in Tempe, AZ.

I think there are a couple of reasons why people are mad at you.

1. You don't come onto a nursing forum and start bashing nurses.

2. You have an extremely bad attitude.

3. We are all thinking, if you have a hard time with any aspect of a person, why do you want to take care of people? You come off as I will do anything for you as long as I am not grossed out by it. That is definately not a professional attitude and I for one would NOT want to work with you or be seen by you as a doctor. A doctor diagnoses, Nurses give care. It is not the fact we "like cleaning up feces", but the fact we can help someone not able to help themselves, give them back their dignity, and restore their health. We are proud to take full care of our patients feces, vomit and anything else that come along with it. Please do not make our job less by making demeaning comments. If it wasn't for us, you WOULD be doing it. We, nurses, make you job easier and better. Melissa SN

INNYC28--

First, the "gross" in gross anatomy doesn't mean "gross" like yucky, you dork, it means gross as in not-microscopic.

Second, who are you to come into a nursing forum, plant yourself out there making arrogant, judgmental remarks and then snap at people who cared enough to actually give you support and encouragement?

I actually DID go to med school (didn't flunk out, either) and have chosen nursing because I enjoy it. You don't seem to care about people in general. Look how you are treating the people on this thread!

Dealing with humanity ought to be the least of your concerns. No matter what field you go into, you won't do as well or give as much, because you don't care about other people.

Since you are here, and since you are talking about volunteering ("because it is a requirement of med school," not because you want to help anyone but yourself), you ought to do yourself and the world a favor and take a little time to become a little bit human yourself.

Please do keep us posted on your progress and location. I for one do not wish to EVER be treated by you or work with you.

I'm sure there's a mutual fund or investment firm looking for a guy just like you.....
