becoming a cna to attend nursing school at suny downstate medical center

Published

Hi I'm applying to city tech to do the perquisites so I can go on to suny downstate nursing program. I understand that I can't be working so thinking about becoming a cna and work part time. I have a lot of questions :

1) does anyone know any accredited cna schools that are cheap?

2) what are the typical hours for night or evening shift for a cna?

3) what are the typical hours for suny downstate asbn program? I know they open around 8am

4) I know that the deadline for supported documents for suny downstate asbn are Jan 3rd but what's the deadline to take the teas exam?

5)what's on this teas exam?

I know it's a lot of questions but I'm living paycheck to paycheck and I'm trying to change that so please help out as much as possible

I do not know of any cheap accredited CNA programs. I am a CNA I work part-time evenings so I work 3 days a week 3pm-11pm there is also 11pm-7pm.

the teas exam consist of science, math, and English or reading and writing.

1) does anyone know any accredited cna schools that are cheap?

Idk what you define as "cheap", most programs on average are around $1000. If you work in a nursing home, they may reimburse you. You said you're going to city tech so research CNA schools in NYC. Private accredited schools will have a triangle symbol. The outside of the triangle is blue and says "proprietary school supervision", the inside of the triangle is red and says "NYS educated department licensed". You can verify if a private school is licensed here:

Is Your School Licensed? | Adult Career and Continuing Education Services | NYS Education Department

Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the triangle symbol I described and click where it says "find a licensed school" and you can look for schools.

For public licensed programs, you can look at this site: NYS Nursing - Nurse Aide (CNA) Programs

You may qualify for some of these programs for low cost or free

2) what are the typical hours for night or evening shift for a cna?

Hours typically run, morning shift: 7AM-3:30PM, evening shift: 3PM-11:30PM, overnight shift 11PM-7:30AM. I know one hospital that offers 12 hour shifts but it's difficult to find hospitals that do that for aides. Most do not in NYC or Long Island

3) what are the typical hours for suny downstate asbn program? I know they open around 8am

You mean their business/office hours? About 8:30AM-4:30PM

4) I know that the deadline for supported documents for suny downstate asbn are Jan 3rd but what's the deadline to take the teas exam?

The deadline was December 15. I submitted my stuff early October and took the TEAS in June. The deadlines change every year.

5)what's on this teas exam?

Reading, Math, Science and Language. Downstate really weighs Reading and Math. When it comes to the science portion, I strongly recommend taking A&P 1&2 first before taking the TEAS. Alotta the science questions are based off those 2 classes. You already have a bachelors like I do so I found the reading and math to be pretty elementary; I had taken math and english composition and literature classes during my first bachelors so I felt prepared for those sections. They're kinda basic.
