Becoming A More Desirable Job Applicant

Published

I am currently in my second semester of a five semester ADN program. I have no medical or CNA experience. My CNA license has expired, so there is no way for me to gain experience other than clinicals and preceptorship through my program. Is there anything else I can do to strengthen my resume? In exactly one year I will be applying for a position as a new grad and I realized that I need to be thinking ahead.

Also, can someone describe in detail a typical new grad program at a hospital? Is there any chance of negotiating a higher pay rate or will I most likely be paid the minimum starting pay regardless?

If you don't want to recert for your CNA, consider volunteering at an area hospital. Also, check out nurse tech/extern/intern positions. Really anything in a major hospital system can help (my friend worked as a transporter in a major national hospital system throughout school and was hired as internal).

Many new grad programs are structured differently depending on the size and desires of the hospital but all include didactic and clinical preceptorships before setting you lose as an independent functioning RN. Anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months depending on the facility and the position.

Negotiating pay is most likely to not happen unless you are in an area with a severe nursing drought. At this point, it's take it or leave it in some places. Too many bodies and not enough places willing to take new grads.

Good luck in your search and the rest of school!
