Bcit nursing 2017 intake

Published

Hi Everyone,

Who has applied to the nursing intake yet for 2017?

If yes, what was your GPA? Please share a little info about yourself (:

See you in class,

Pumpkin spicy

I had applied for the August intake. My current status is pending department review and the summary letter shows that the next step decision will be made within 4 weeks after the deadline.

My GPA is not high, 3.51 now. but I have taken 20 courses in the last 3 years including high school upgrading and UT courses, not the ESL. I have a diploma from china but it has nothing to do with health science. I have a live-in caregiver certificate from a private Canadian college. My volunteer hours in my reference is 141. I plan to do more volunteering. In my mandatory questionnaire, I also wrote about my years working experience in restaurant. I have registered the elective libs courses in summer as suggested by the program adviser.

The time I spent on taking those courses has been over the length of the actual nursing program. I am retaking the course that has the lowest grade and taking some courses that I am confident with.

It is my first application. Really hope I can get accepted. Will try again if not get in.

Hi there!

Does anyone know if they look at our GPA or our CGPA?

Yes they do. There is a previous post talking about how the department selects applicants. I hope I can still find it. However, they do not only look at GPA, also other stuffs.

I found the post talking about the process of selecting applicants:

Hey guys. I emailed a BCIT advisor about how they rank the applications. Here's what they said:

Applicants are ranked on a point system in the application review. Highest points to academics, second to work experience, and third to completion of LIBS 7001/7002

No points are actually awarded for volunteer experience, however, this is what sets applicants apart at the end.

· Applicants are first prioritized based upon academic qualifications. Short listed candidates require a minimum 1 year of post-secondary education or more depending upon the application pool. Recent short-listed applicants have had 45 to 60 credits of post-secondary study completed at time of application. LIBS 7001 and LIBS 7002 can be taken in advance.

  • Those with related work experience such as, care aides, paramedics and LPN's will be given highest ranking, second to medical assistants, third to life guards.

  • GPA of short-listed applicants is taken into consideration (no specific GPA requirement, but students with poor transcripts will not be short-listed)

  • Having a degree or large number of post-secondary credits does not guarantee acceptance. The department is looking for a student who fulfills the minimum entrance requirements, post-secondary requirements, related work experience & related volunteer experience.

Successful Applicant Profile:

  • Communicates effectively: Applicants must be fluent in written and oral English.Students begin clinical in week 2, must be able to communicate in a large setting and take leadership of a team to communicate demands
  • Mature, able to handle high degree of responsibility
  • Leadership skills (takes initiative, problem solver)
  • Assertive (due to responsibilities in hospital; the need to communicate with patients, families and health care professions; and the PBL strategy, passive students often have difficulty in program)
  • Team player
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Professional
  • Compassionate/empathetic
  • Understanding of shift work, being on your feet for long periods of time, loud and fast moving environment
  • Have had volunteer or related work experience
  • Understand the program and PBL (problem based learning)
  • Math Skills: Review basic math skills such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, ratio and proportion and have the ability to solve word problems.

I hope that helps any future applicants!! :)

This is really helpful! Thank you! :)

Hi!

This is my first time applying so I'm super nervous about the process. Waiting is the absolute worst!

I have a 3.2 GPA, 64 credits with a humanities and life sciences background. I have about 80 hours of volunteering at Senior's residence facility and a bit of work experience. I've taken LIBS 7021 and am taking LIBS 7001 online right now. I'm hoping my experience is enough to counter my lower GPA...

I talked to Dina, the admin coord for nursing, last semester and she said that the typical successful applicant has a 3.0 and about 60 credits so I'm hopeful!

All the best to everyone out there!

Guess I'll post a bit about myself too... I applied for the August intake with a 3.5 GPA for my prerequisites and 38 credits total. I have around 200 hours of volunteering from a senior home and a hospital and I have some work experience in the customer service area. This is my second time applying for this program and I really hope I get in! Everything I've heard about BCIT nursing so far been very positive! :whistling:

Hi, I am hopefully finishing my degree this summer. I enrolled in BCIT post RN distant BSN with a specialty in Jan/14. I can not say enough nice things about this Nursing program. I already had my RNs from a diploma program and had started on my degree through Memorial University ( NFLD), I live in Nova Scotia. By far BCIT has been a better University and I received much more from them then MUN. I am currently enrolled in LIBS 7021 and have Community Nursing 2 and an elective to complete before obtaining my degree. Good luck to everyone who has a chance to go to BCIT,

hi does anybody know how many people applied?

Hello all,

I was short-listed then wait-listed for the January 2017 intake. I ended up being in the top 5 of the wait list so once it was determined I wouldn't get in to that intake due to the lack of seats, they automatically accepted me for the August intake.

I applied with only 24 credits (not a lot) and a 3.1 GPA (not great). I've been working full-time as a health unit coordinator since July of 2012 though and have worked at many different hospitals as well as two cancer centers.

I am sharing this to not discourage those who think they may not have a great application. I got in with the bare minimum. I think my work experience was probably what ended up getting me in. If you get short-listed and have to do the questionnaire, put effort into it! I was able to relate all my answers to my current job in health care so I think I scored well on it.

Good luck to all!

Goodluck to us all! I have just heard from the department today that i got short listed! So nervous 😭
