BCIT, LANGARA, DOUGLAS nursing

Published

Just to give everyone a background, I just graduated from high school here in Vancouver. With all the stories I've heard of how long waiting lists are, of how BCIT only takes in applicants that have degrees/diplomas, and so many more, I'm absolutely anxious in getting in nursing school. My only goal is to become a nurse in the next 4-5 years, but again with all the stories I've heard from other applicants, I don't exactly know what to do anymore.

So to any nursing graduates here Vancouver/ BC or to anyone who has successfully gotten in either Langara, BCIT, or DOUGLAS nursing program, do any of you have tips/advice on how I can get in nursing school? I currently have 0 post-secondary credits but have over 100 volunteer hours with kids and seniors (And regarding volunteer experience, will a non-health-care related volunteer experience help with my application?)

Also, if it's fine with anyone, can any of you share your experience with the application process.

P.S: I'm starting to get the pre-reqs this January ?

Hi Zebbiana!

I’ve just applied to Langara September 2020 intake ??. I think we are going to get offers in mid-March.

From their posts, it looks like seaofgreatness started at Langara Nursing in Sept 2019.

When are you planning on applying?

Hi CassieBaxter,

Wow! I'm super excited for you! Please give us an update if you got in!

I'm planning on applying for Langara Nursing in 2021. I'm currently working on the 5 pre-requisites.

My plan B is to apply in BCIT Nursing (hopefully in 2021 as well.)

If you don't mind, can you share your GPA and the grades you got for the 5 pre-requisites?

Thank you, Zebbiana! I’m very excited to have submitted my first application. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster of excitement, anticipation, dread, stress, and then some more excitement ? as I’ve been learning about all the different programs (and worked through the first five pre reqs).

I got a 4.00 GPA for my five Langara application pre reqs. I’m also continuing to work on my Douglas pre reqs in the meantime.

If I don’t get accepted at Langara I’m going to throw in a long shot application at BCIT in the spring too.

Where are you taking your pre reqs?

By looking at it (with a 4.00 GPA for all 5 pre-reqs), there's no reason for Langara not to accept you! You got this!

Since BCIT and Langara have quite different pre-reqs, I'm starting with 2 pre req courses in BCIT this January. I'm also gonna take some pre req courses in Langara after that.

Any tips on how to get that 4.00 GPA?? ?

Which classes are you taking to start your pre-nursing journey? I started with my first class (academic writing) at BCIT and then moved along to Douglas. I found that my one class at BCIT cost more than two (and almost more than three! ?) classes at Douglas.

I have been studying part time while I work, which has been effective for me in terms of being able to dedicate enough time to my school assignments and studies. I would highly recommend using ratemyprofessors.com to find your classes with highly rated teachers. (My worst grade was from a teacher who had poor ratings.) Additionally, I always sit in the front of the class, and ask&answer questions during the lecture ???. I try to be as engaged as possible in the materials- this helps me process and remember... and I think that teachers are happy to give extra help to students who show enthusiastic participation.

Hey guys!

I was reading through this post and was hoping I could receive some input. I'm having a difficult time deciding between what school to go too and would love to hear what you all think. I applied to BCIT, Douglas, and Langara this year and so far I have been accepted into both Douglas and Langara. I'm still waiting to hear back from BCIT.

Breaking things down, it seems like Douglas has the most pros to me. Douglas would be a 15 min drive. It only has 6 terms, so I would get summers off. It's a cheaper option than the other two. I'm also familiar with the school, since I've done all of my classes there.

BCIT is said to have the best reputation. IDK if that really matters. BCIT would be approx. a 30 mins drive (give or take depending into the traffic), more expensive, 9 terms (believe we don't get summers off).

Langara also has a good reputation. However, langara would be 9 terms as well (no summers off), more expensive than Douglas, and the drive is approx. 45 mins. Again, give or take depending on the traffic.

If I choose BCIT or Langara, I would get to start fall 2021, meaning I get to graduate Summer 2024. If I choose Douglas, I start in the Winter of 2022, meaning I graduate in fall 2024.

With the pros that Douglas holds, do you think I should go to BCIT or Langara simply because I get to finish a semester earlier and because it has a "better reputation"? Let me know what you guys think please! Any input would be helpful.

Hi Reemaa,

Congratulations on getting into Langara and Douglas!

I started my pre requisites at Douglas and completed them in Summer 2020. I was just wondering when you finished your pre requisites for Douglas?

Thanks!

Personally I chose Douglas even though I could have gotten in to Langara or BCIT faster because of the cost savings and overall good reputation of the school. It’s also the most convenient to me. I have enjoyed it so far and have had some great faculty support me on the journey.

Thank you! ? I finished fall 2019. I believe I read in the one of the emails that offers will be going out to people who finished in Summer 2020 or earlier. Did you apply for the Winter 2022 intake?

That's awesome to hear. Definitely made me feel better. I'm leaning more towards Douglas because it just makes the most sense. I think it was just the reputation part about Langara and BCIT that people are making me feel like I need to go there over Douglas. At the end of the day, I don't really think it matters what school you graduate from. Thank you for your input ☺️

To be honest I think it’s a prestige thing with BCIT. From what I understand the NCLEX passing rates are pretty similar. Ultimately what matters is that you get a good education that opens up doors for you, and doesn’t bankrupt you.
