Hi,

I am a new nurse in PA, working in tele. We are thinking of returning to N Cal next summer (Moved back to PA from San Ramon 5 yrs ago, I was not an RN when I lived there before). I am familiar with the commuting and the cost of living including the housing.

1) What are Bay area starting salaries are running for an RN with 1 yr experience-I would be interested in Tele or Cardiac ICU. I am interested in San Ramon area as well as Menlo Park area.

2) Do most of the N Cal hospitals have nurses unions? Pros/Cons?

Any other info you are willing to pass along would be appreciated.

Most N. Cal hospitals have unions. The largest one is the CNA (California Nurses Association). CNA represents UC, Kaiser, and Sutter Health as some of the hospitals in the SF Bay Area. You can read about the latest contract negotiations and some salary structures at: http://www.calnurses.org/facilities-bargaining/

Stanford has CRONA, their own union.

Typical salaries for 1 year of experience in the range from $39/hr to $46/hr depending on whether you are in a union shop or not. This does not include the evening and weekend differentials. (To all the nurses outside of Calfornia: although these salaries seem high, the cost of living here is very high, so things even out.)

Note that lots of nurses want to move here, so be assertive and apply early. Look online; that's the way most of the jobs are posted. Then follow up. If you have an alumni association from nursing school, leverage that for contacts that work in the Bay Area. Good luck.
