2011-2012 BAT - Decker School SUNY Binghamton hopefuls

Published

Anyone else apply for May 2011 @ SUNY Binghamton BAT program? Anyone else anxiously awaiting a reply like me?? :)

How 'bout anyone that was accepted last year - when did you hear back?

Also, what is the program like - I did some searching on BU Brain and it looks like the schedule (classes back to back with clinicals in the same day) can be a little crazy! Were there ever situations where you have both on campus and far-off (Syracuse) obligations in one day?

Thanks!

thanks EveryDayAgift and mahanabay ~~

my situation: because of the online application, the recent change from the paper base to computer base, high school transcript........everything finally done in early Nov

i guess i still have to wait for another month for the letter to come if i get in....finger crossed *

Congrats on the acceptances guys! I'm still hoping to get in, though I just doubt I will. I submitted my grades from my fall semester in late December. My overall GPA was significantly higher, I hope they use my updated GPA...

@spiritedkidd,

Hi,

I thought I finished my application in September, but then there was something funky about a switchover to an online only supplement. So, then I submitted another online supplement when it became available in late October.

I think next year, with the online supp. set, you will be able to get everything in by end of Sept/Early Oct, which is what admissions advised me to do if possible. Word of advice, ask your reference writers to start letters early :)

I did not start directly after undergrad. I graduated back in 05. Between then and now, I've done some grad school (different discipline though) and biology research work. No real healthcare experience to speak of, just FYI - so if thats what you are worried about missing coming straight out of undergrad, I wouldn't rule it out on that account. ( I did have some history working with behavioral needs children, but nothing in a hospital setting)

If your app is strong otherwise, I can't think of any particularly compelling reason to not apply out of undergrad. If they say no, then you can always reapply anyway.... :)

You mentioned needing pre-reqs....Can you get any pre-reqs done in the summer before fall so the grades will be reflected on the transcript you submit with your app? I know that Bing. accepts Rochester SON "Fast Track" pre-nursing classes, which are pricey, but 100% online.

@mahanabay:

I actually prefer to do the program right when I come out of undergraduate school. Do you think that would be possible? As for reference letters, how many are required and does it matter who they're written by? But I'm afraid that they won't accept me due to the fact that I would have finished only half of the pre-reqs by the time I finish applying.

Do you think they look for experiences (hospital setting or not) or do they mainly look at GPA and all that? I realize most of these questions can be answered by someone at an information session, which I plan to go to, but I just want to gather as much information as possible. I interned at Wilson Hospital (in Johnson City) last semester and most of the BAT students I saw seemed older than 21, 22 years old.

Once again, thanks for all the information. It's really helpful and I am greatly appreciative!

@spiritedkidd -

I wish you the best on your journey into the BAT! I would agree with Mahanabay that overall strength of application is important from what Binghamton told us.

You'll need two letters...one academic and one either professional or personal. Since you'll need a professor make sure you make connections now - while you're still in school. Go to office hours...stand out if you can.

I wouldn't worry too much about not having all of the pre-reqs done. I had quite a few to do when I applied. The website mentions that health care experience is desirable but not necessary. And I agree with your observation...from what Decker told me, most students don't come directly from undergrad. But doesn't mean that you can't!

@Mahanabay - Did you actually do both the older supplemental application as well as the newer online version? The transition confused me as well but admissions ended up allowing me to go with the older supplemental form.

Everydayagift,

Yes, they had me fill out both forms :). I didn't write an extra essay; they had me copy and paste my old one in for both supplemental essays. Admissions (not the nursing school, the main office) swore my App wouldn't get forwarded if I didn't submit the online supplement! It wasn't a big deal, but I felt a little nervous at the time - especially because I felt like I was doing the essay part "wrong". All's well that ends well though ;)

Hey guys, I am currently waiting for an admissions decision from bing too. I am a senior undergrad at bing. I think it's very possible to get in right from undergrad...I know someone who is in the program now and she was a senior last year. I didn't submit my application stuff until november so that's probably why I haven't gotten a response yet, but I completed all my pre-req's already.

I'm an undergrad in bing too! (junior, though) I plan to finish all my pre-reqs by end of senior year, hopefully. Do you think it'd be possible to get in even though I haven't finished all of them by the time I apply? Also, may I ask what your pre-req and regular GPA is? Best of luck to you!!! :)

Yeah it's definitely possible, there were a couple people in my A&P class that were in the program but didn't finish the pre-req's yet. I mean I'm sure it's best to have as many as possible done but as long as you have a plan to complete them it should be fine. My undergrad GPA is a 3.3...I'm not sure what my pre-req is but it's prob similar.

It eases me a little bit to see some others still haven't heard back. I finished my application right on the deadline, but everything except the supplemental was in at the beginning of November/end of October. I'm really nervous. My undergrad GPA is about 3.65 from both universities I have attended. Pre-reqs are about 3.5 I think. I don't have a ton of experience but an internship and various volunteer experience. I've also had a family member as an alum, no idea if it matters at all though.

I keep pathetically running to the mailbox to check everyday...

Just got my acceptance letter today :)

Good luck s0ad...I'm sure you'll get in.

I still didnt get the letter yet ...and they told me to wait for another week or two

just wondering ...is there an email before anyone get the letter??
