base pay for tulane university/cost of living

hi i live in chicago IL and want to move to new orleans, la. and tulane university hospital is a place i might be considering to work. how is the hospital? what is the base pay for new grads and shift differentials and also how is the cost of living? do they have a weekend program? what is the average 2 bedroom apartment gonna run in a decent area? what are some decent areas to live that is not far from the hospital where i want to work? do they give phone interviews? if any one can help please do. thanks

I was told that the base pay for new grads is 21.00/hr. Not sure about all the other things but a decent 2 bedroom may cost about 600.00/month.

Hey, I work in the same company whom which Tulane is a part of. Tulane hospital is in the downtown New Orleans area. I was offered app 21$ as full time, and 26$ PRN. The downside is paying to park. You can get contract parking, which, if I remember correctly, they can deduct from your check, that can run 30-60$ a month. The cost of living is alot cheaper than Chicago. An apartment in the Metairie area, app 15 min away, can range from 400-700$ month depending on location, and preferences. Downtown near the TUlane area can be much more expensive, for something nice. There are plenty of hospitals also in the Metairie area which are very decent to work, and the pay is comparable. Look into some options, you can e mail me. I can help. Laura:)

thank you for the reply laura.do anyof hospitals in the metairie area help with relocation assistance, or phone interviews, how are the schools in that area? what are some of the top hospitals to work? when is the best time of year move? thank you

I am not sure about the relocation and the phone interviews, I know you can call some hospitals and ask for human resources and get some of that information. The public school system in the Metarie area is far better than the schools in Orleans parish. I am not discouraging you from a job at Tulane, as the pay might be better, than in Metairie, but in my opinion (living in New Orleans all my life) in general, Metairie, is just a better area. Especially if you have younger children. I don't think there is any preference to which time you move. But if you do decide to move to the Orleans parish, and live uptown or downtown, I would suggest spring/summer, because they have many Universities, and the college students usually move in end of summer for fall semester. Some hositals in the Metairie area are Doctors Hospital, East Jefferson Med Ctr, Omega, Lakeside Hospital, Kenner Reg Med Ctr, Ochsner Hospital, to name a few. I will help in any way. Email me. I do not currently work in the area as I am a nursing student. I live on the westbank. This area is also about 15 minutes away from Downtown (where Tulane is located). The Westbank is quiet and decent compared to mid New Orleans area. I would look into moving into areas such as Westbank, Kenner, Metairie, some parts of Eastern New Orleans. I personally (born and raised here) would suggest that these are the safer places to be than in the heart of New Orleans (uptown/downtown). That's only IMHO. :)

Tulane's base pay is 23.75/hr and the diff's aren't bad. weekend nites you can earn $9 extra per hour. I went throught the olol program sponsored by tulane and we were promised jobs but they filled up fast. good luck
