I'm looking for some opinions from the South Florida nurses out there. Should I attend Barry accelerated program with a substantial scholarship or UMiami accelerated without a promised scholarship? Which school has a better reputation in the area? And does the reputation even matter when it comes to find a job? Thank you for your help.

Hey there.
Both schools are good. I've heard that Barry has a good but rigorous program, as UM probably does too. But, I hear the clinicals are much better in Barry than UM (which is weird because UM has its own hospital) I've also heard that UM is more graduate focused than undergraduate focused. A friend of mine who attends Barry says its good and that alot of Barry students are hired in hospitals down here.
Both schools are expensive, but if you have a good scholarship for Barry, I say go to Barry.

I just got accepted to Barry for this fall. I thought about UM but the accelerated is done in only 12 months! Barry's accelerated is 15 months and they have better NCLEX pass rates. I feel that the lower NCLEX pass rates at UM are due to the speed of the program. I'm doing traditional programs because both the accelerated and traditional program end at the same time and I have nothing to do from now till school starts so I might as well start sooner!
Jenny - do you know any examples of hospital clinic sites at Barry? I'd like to find out!

Hey Juniper428,
Did you have to finish all your pre-reqs prior to starting in the fall? Im currently only missing microbio, which I am taking this summer. I had applied for the january entry date, but figured if I can start in the fall then it would be more appropriate.
Thanks!

Hmmm, I did do all the necessary prereqs except for a theology course, But I think in order to get accepted to the nursing program you need the major basics, like A&P, micro, and dev. psych. I would try to apply anyways because they can accept you to the prenursing program. and if they have room you might be able to start this fall once you get your micro done!
So once you get into their prenursing program you can call the undergrad admissions office, then they tell you to call a person in the nursing program who will assign you an advisor. Meet with the advisor and they might be able to clear things up (the whole process of applying to Barry feels very backward and it took forever to finally get accepted to the nursing school).
good luck!

Hi,
Are we required to take an entrance exam?
I found out more about the clinical locations at Barry. They actually have clinical sites ALL over the Miami area such as aventura hospital, Mount Sinai, Jackson Memorial and many more but not the southern area of Miami. so you get a lot of different experiences. Maybe UMiami only has their clinical sites at their own hospital?

Nope, they have them in multiple areas like Miami children's hospital for peds, baptist hospital and Jackson memorial for all other. For psych I think they do it at the UM hospital as well
I see. Thanks for the info!

Hi, I know this is an old post, but I'm a Barry Alumni and thought I'd chip in.
Clinical sites were all over Miami-dade and broward county...Below is a list of hospitals we had contracts with and the rotations...these may change for you guys, but it's rough idea. Also most of these hospitals were available for your senior preceptorship:
Jackson Memorial (Therapeutics, Med-surg, Peds, Mental Health, High Acuity basically any rotation)
VA (Med-surg, Mental Health)
Aventura (Therapeutics, Med-surg, High Acuity)
Baptist (High Acuity...normally other rotations aren't available bc Barry Baptist Scholars get placement 1st)
South Miami (Med-Surg)
North Shore (OB)
Mercy (High Acuity, Preceptorship)
Miami Chidrens (Peds)
Mount Sinai (Preceptorship)
Broward General (Med-Surg, High Acuity)
Memorial Regional (Med-surg)
Memorial West (OB)
Coral Springs (Peds)
Joe Dimaggio (part of Memorial regional- Peds)
Cleveland Clinic (Therapeutics, Med-Surg, High Acuity)
Holy Cross (Med-Surg, High-Acuity)
Imperial Point Medical Center (Mental Health, High Acuity )
Best of luck to all in nursing school!
