I am trying to make an important decision and would like some advice. If anyone out there works at Baptist Downtown, Wolfson's, or St. Vincents could you please tell me the pros and cons of each. I want to go into L&D or the NICU but being a soon to be new grad it almost seems impossible. I plan on doing what ever it takes to get there but would love to do my preceptorship and orientation in the department I would like to work in. I keep getting the..."go the Med/Surg route" from the recruiters and absolutly HATE Med/Surg. :angryfire Out of the three St. V's starts off paying better and I heard Baptist does not pay holiday hours. True or False? Money is not my driving force at this time but I do have a small school loan to pay off. I want to go to where ever I will get the best experience and training as I realize I will just be clay needing molding! I, unlike some newbies do not claim to "know it all". Please...teach me! I will be a sponge and soak up every thing I get the opprotunity to learn from experienced nurses. If there are any recruiters out there...please give GN's a chance in other units besdes the Med/Surg.

Well let me start off by saying I know it has probably been some this since this post but...I worked @ St.V's as a tech for 10 yrs...I just moved to Ohio and I am a new RN now.You are right as far as not being able to get into specialty areas being a new nurse...I will say that I love St.V's it was my home, but I also worked @ Shands for a period of 2yrs. By it being a teaching hospital I know that u can get into those areas even being a new grad...something for u to think about! The only reason why I left was because I got "homesick" and went back to St.V's...well I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK to you.

CJohn,
I would love to hear a 6yr follow-up. Did you get that L/D or NICU job? Anyone with a similar story?
Accepting forms of inspiration. :)
Sugarbee,
Yes, have spent the last 6 years in L&D as a LDRP nurse! I started at Southeast Georgia Health Systems up in Brunswick Ga (about 40 minutes from my house) because they sponsored our Expedited Track Nursing program and the job was "promised" to us. I actually received a job offer in the nursery and Mother/baby before I even graduated due to a nurse/preceptor written recommendation. I worked on that floor for about 8 months and a position opened up at our local hospital in the same system. I work as a Labor nurse, postpartum/baby nurse or in the level 1 nursery (where our Peds push it to level 2 babies) love it and can not think of anywhere else I would want to work. Thanks for checking in.
CJ,
That is just what I was hoping to hear! I went into nursing to become a L&D nurse!
I'm a FSCJ student in OB now and Graduating in Dec. I am literally in the same place you were 6 years ago. Frustration, hope, excitment and all!
I haven't looked into GA, I think I'll do that next. I'm willing to drive 40mins to get the job I want.
If you have any other words of wisdom please share.
